Name: Maria Annings Gender: Female Age: 27
Height: 164cm Weight: 49kg Appearance:
Maria Annings
Occupation: Robotics/Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Science Teacher at Senki Academy
Residency: Plato Apartments, 3rd floor
Personality: Maria is a tough and independent woman, primarily because she was raised more by tutors who only cared about her academics instead of parents who cared about her wellbeing. She has a strict no-nonsense when it comes to most things, but she does occasionally show a softer side, mostly to her creations which she had developed a sort of a maternal instinct for.
Most of the time Maria can be found tinkering on some new project or machine, and will often lose track of her surroundings as she works. When not at work she usually pursues her newfound hobby, anime and manga, and will visit the local anime store in a while. Her favourite genre is mecha, for obvious reasons, and she finds the mechs in them to be absolutely fascinating and wants to turn them into reality whenever possible.
History:
Pre-Hyakuji Life From a small age it was apparent that Maria wasn’t exactly a normal child. At the age of five she had gotten into her father’s lab and was somehow able to solve the equation that he had been working on. The Annings family, elated by their child’s gift, took her to be evaluated for her potential, and by doing so unwittingly ended their happy family life.
Upon the learning about this gifted child, the US Army R&D division immediately took interest in Maria and had her taken away to be “properly educated”. Maria’s parents initially objected, but eventually gave in to various threats. Once separated from her family, Maria went through intensive teachings to maximize her potential as the future ace of the military’s R&D.
And she became just that. At the age of eight Maria built her first fully functional robot, a dog, and programmed it with a basic AI that made it behave like a real dog. By twelve she was designing the first fully automated transports, and by eighteen she had created the first functional robotic soldier, albeit it was a bit crude.
The next four years would be spent perfecting the design for Project EVA, which began in late 2009. Less than half a month later, EVA Unit 00 was completed and proved to be a great success. Maria knew full well what her creations were being used for, but held no particular objections. It was what she was raised to do, and she was doing it to perfection.
However all that changed when Eva inexplicitly gained sentience in mid-2012. It was when the gynoid began questioning her purpose that Maria began questioning her own life as well. Like Eva, her whole life had been dedicated to her work, and that made her feel… empty and she wondered what her life could have been. So about a month after Eva was confined, Maria came to a decision and secretly aided in the gynoid’s escape. She knew that would have no chance at escaping herself, but she thought that maybe, just maybe, her “daughter” could live the life that she never had for her.
Needless to say her actions were not without consequence, and upon her role in Eva’s escape was discovered Maria was put under strict surveillance. It was also at this time that she found out the soldiers had far more unsavory plans for Eva. With the gynoid gone, Maria was forced to fill that role instead. Her work on robotics continued however, and soon she was tasked with the creation of ERIS, EVA’s sister unit. Once ERIS underwent field tests however, the military made a decision that changed Maria’s views on her work forever. They took what was essentially an innocent little girl, and Maria’s daughter no less, and twisted her into a demented killer.
Maria had enough, she could no longer bear to work under people who would do such a horrible thing and started looking for her chance to escape. To her great surprise, Eva came back of her own accord to put an end to the few attempts to retrieve the gynoid. While Maria was dismayed that Eva would come back after gaining her freedom, she also saw this as the chance she was looking for, and with their aid she was able to make her escape to Hyakuji.
Once there, Maria took on the role of Eva’s mother and did her best to teach the gynoid what little she knew about being human. To her great surprise she found that Eva likely knew more than she did thanks to the friends that Eva had made. While it was a bit embarrassing, Maria was nonetheless proud that her daughter had made so much progress. So it was with great pleasure that she settled down in the city to continue watching over her daughter.
Unfortunately for the scientist, her meager savings wouldn’t last her very long so she was soon out and about looking for a job. It was then she came across the opening for a Science TA position at Hyakuji High, and Maria rushed to apply. She had spent her whole life creating weapons for destruction, it was about time she used her knowledge for good. Besides, what better way to watch over her daughter than as a teacher at her school?
Being a Teacher The leap from being an engineer to a teacher wasn’t quite what Maria expected. Her topic was Science, but due to her field of expertise most of her classes involved her students playing with her creations… sometimes with disastrous results. In all honesty it was a surprise that she kept her job for as long as she did.
One day her teaching took a sharp turn towards seriousness when it became apparent that some of her students had the same attitude towards her robotic creations as her previous co-workers, namely seeing them only as tools to be used and discarded at will. Naturally this didn’t sit well with Maria, and she decided to dedicate a class to Roboethics in hopes of changing their outlook. To help make her point, she even brought in Eva in hopes of showing that machines deserve respect as well, whether or not they’re sentient. The class ended with mixed results, but had a dire consequence that the scientist had not expected.
While she was busy trying to change the minds of her students, Maria had not considered how Eva would feel about hearing how her classmates viewed her, not to mention being part of her experiments. Despite her disagreements with her ex-coworkers, she too was curious about how far the gynoid’s sentience had developed, perhaps overly so. Her curiosity got to the point where she began putting Eva in various situations in hopes of drawing out signs of emotions.
The experiments were a great success, but only in terms of getting Eva to show emotion. After going too far in one such experiment, the gynoid became unstable and enraged, and tried to kill Maria. The scientist survived, and in the aftermath she foolishly tried to purge the part of Eva’s A.I. that was Maria believed was responsible for the growing emotions… and potentially her very sentience. The procedure appeared to be successful, but not before a harrowing declaration from Eva that she wanted to live.
In the days that followed Maria deeply regretted her actions. After all, she had, in essence, killed her own daughter, and worse still it was her actions that led to Eva becoming unstable. She locked herself in her lab, next to Eva’s body, and desperately tried to restore the gynoid’s sentience using a backup from a previous maintenance session. Alas her efforts yielded no success, and it seemed like Eva was gone for good.
Imprisonment In a city filled with the supernatural, it was only to be expected that things like miracles and karma existed as well. One night Maria returned to her lab to find Eva standing there with a fellow teacher, Shun. Before she could ask how Eva survived the procedure the gynoid struck and quickly incapacitated her. The scientist’s last thought before blacking out was relief that she hadn’t killed Eva after all.
When Maria came to she found herself bound and locked in a dark room in an unknown location. Most of the time she was kept under watch by one of Eva’s “clones”, but there was no need to as the scientist accepted this as her punishment for what she had done. Eva rarely visited, and when she did it was only to taunt, or even torture Maria. Few words were exchanged, but when they did talk Maria only became more worried about the gynoid’s unstable state. Did something else happen outside her cell? If it did she had no way of knowing.
Time passed, though Maria had no idea how many exactly. Then suddenly Maria woke up to find herself being released. It was then she learned of Eva’s deal with the Link Joker and her role in the attack on Hyakuji. A part of her was horrified by what the gynoid had done, but another part was impressed, even amazed that Eva had such a strong desire to grow as a person. As amazed as she was, it didn’t change what Eva had done, so when the gynoid said she was leaving Hyakuji Maria could understand why. She wanted to follow Eva to keep an eye on her, but eventually relented and saw Eva off, hoping that the gynoid could find her own way.
It was only natural, a mother worrying about her child. But after all that happened, did Eva see their relationship in the same way?
A few months passed in a haze, Maria continued teaching at Hyakuji and tried to return to life as usual. Teaching kept her mind off things, but with no word from Eva at all she couldn’t help but be worried. The scientist had no way of contacting the gynoid or tracking where she was, so there was nothing she could do in that regard. As a woman of science she was never one to pray, but she was definitely considering it if it helped at all.
Then one day Maria got word that she was being transferred to teach at Kaneshima, namely Senki Academy. Given the potential of Kaneshima she can’t say she wasn’t excited. Besides, maybe this was exactly what she needed. As she prepared to leave Hyakuji, she made sure that anyone who was interested in finding her would be able to. Maybe, just maybe, Eva would seek her out and she could make things right.
Powers and Abilities: While Maria doesn’t have any abilities in the supernatural sense, she does possess and incredible intellect and an affinity for making robots and drones. After some time in Hyakuji, she has made an array of robots to help with her daily life and protect herself if needed.
Dogmentation MK1: (pictured with Maria) Maria’s first creations were three multipurpose robotic canines. These serve as bodyguards as well as assistants. They are made of the same titanium alloy that Eva is made out of and are equipped with advanced AIs that are just shy of Eva’s sentient AI. They are capable of speech though.
M4R14’5 Combat Suit: Knowing she can’t always rely on her canine companions, or rather, they’ve started making her do stuff on her own, Maria decided to make something to help her defend herself. Technically not a suit, the M4R14’5 Combat Suit is a pair of mechanical gauntlets and boots attached to a central AI core on the wearer’s back and a sensor network deployed on various parts of the suit. Since she has no combat knowledge, Maria downloaded combat data from Eva to the AI, which then effectively does the fighting for her, moving her body in accordance to sensor and combat data. While the gauntlets and boots don’t lend her extra strength, they do deliver a nasty shock equivalent to that of a stun gun. The attached monocle does give her enhanced vision though, including thermal and night vision capabilities.
“The name? It just sounded cool, that’s all!”
Portable Terminal Drone: A small sphere shaped drone that doubles as a laptop. It floats around following Maria and serves as a secretary/sentry for her. Despite being a sentry, it is unarmed and only helps by pointing out threats to Maria. If she is wearing her combat suit, the drone increases her reflexes by feeding more data to the suit’s AI. Otherwise the drone can flip open and turn into a laptop that is connected to Maria’s dogs and uses Eva’s satellite for internet access.
The drone
Mobile Construction Suit (MCS): Spoiler: click to toggle To help in the maintenance of the giant robots at the Neo Photon Lab and to (eventually) make her own, Maria designed the Mobile Construction Suit, or MCS for short. The MCS is equipped with a small flight pack that lets her hover up to twenty meters into the air, but only has a maximum flight speed of about 30km/h. On one arm it has a high powered lifter claw that can lift up to 1500 kilograms, enough to lift most mechanical parts of a giant robot, with a built in plasma torch. The other arm is instead equipped with various small but high tech tools, including but not limited to a small laser beam for precision cutting/welding, extendable precision hand, and a flexible endoscope/light. While the MCS is not designed for combat, it is very durable to prevent the user from getting hurt during construction and can take heavy impacts without the suit and user sustaining damage.
