The suburban district was quiet. In that quiet, a man appeared.

It was a cold winter night in late January. He appeared on a rooftop, quietly and without warning. Anyone who looked up at him would see just another youth. An odd one, with white hair and gray eyes, but there was certainly no lack of oddness in this city. Those who looked closer would notice an ethereal quality about him. It was as if he was weightless, as if his feet didn't touch the ground.

But it hardly mattered. There was no one around to notice him as he looked out at the town, a hint of a smile on his face.

"So...this is where he lives..."

A hand, outstretched towards the unsuspecting town.

"Well..."

"...time to have a little fun..."

Present

It was an ordinary quiet night in the suburban district. Quiet enough, and cold enough that most of the district's residents were asleep. Because the streets were so empty, it was likely that no one would notice the two creatures that paced quietly down the darkened streets, at least at first.

The creatures looked identical to each other. Both of them were canine in form, almost wolf-like in appearance, with two tails instead of a single tail. They sniffed the ground and the air as they moved, with the telltale pace of predators looking for prey.

Und da der Geist an mir vorüberging standen mir die Haare zu Berge an meinem Leibe.
There was a chill in the air that not even the hot, decaf, vending machine coffee he sipped could seem to shake off. This whole island had a strange energy to it, entirely unlike anything he'd experienced before. It felt foreign, enigmatic, and most importantly, not of God. However, what had learned to solve by a midnight stroll and a warm drink left him feeling emptier than usual. Something foul was on the air, and despite his better judgement, he was seeking it out.

Had he realized what he might come across...

He would never have hesitated.

A hollow, metallic echoed into the darkness as a familiar can struck the hind of one of the beasts. It was as he feared, demons, creatures from the pit. This island was worse off than he'd originally surmised. The least he could do was try and leave it better off than when he found it.

"You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder." He spoke the verse aloud, adjusting how glasses calmly as he did. Abel raised his right hand, the shimmering outline of a blade emanating from his fist. This would be his first time drawing it here on Kaneshima. From the smell of things, it would not be the last.

It was late.

Unusually late.

But not so unusual for Hiroyuki Tsukasa. He had gone to Kaneshima Broadway to take in a particular one night only idol performance. Still riding high on the music and the general hype of the event, he walked obliviously through the Suburban District with no concern for his situation. The event itself had started late and he stayed after so long chatting with others that he had missed the last ride back towards campus.

"Miyu-chan was so cute this time," he mumbled to himself idly without a care in the world.

But the island was not so big. He had walked to and from the Broadway many times in the past. And so it was that he found himself happily strolling through the night as he hummed tunes from the concert to himself. In the distance, he thought he heard the braying of some stray dog but he paid the occurrence little mind. He never for a second considered it to be anything that might suggest some sign of trouble.

As it had happened so many times in the past, he would stumble upon the trouble at random without warning...

The demon whose hindquarters Abel had struck turned around, a low growl in its throat as it rounded onto him. Further ahead of the demon, down the street, its companion started to turn as well. The rearmost one growled, beginning to pad towards Abel, but the one that he had struck gave very little warning as it sank down onto its haunches, leaping towards him.

A flash of light.

Before Abel could even begin to defend himself against the beast, a streak of light shot past him, an arrow with a glowing piece of paper pierced onto its shaft. The arrow struck the beast in its foreleg, knocking it backward with a snap of light and more force than such a small arrow should have made. The beast crashed against the ground, rolling backwards from the force of the blow.

"You should be more careful, wandering around this late at night. You never know what might be lurking in the dark."

A man, in his early to mid-twenties, dressed in traditional clothing. Scraps of paper covered in calligraphy covered one of his eyes. He held a longbow in one hand, already reaching for another arrow with the other. Each of his arrows had an ofuda speared onto them, a piece of paper with intricate calligraphy drawn onto them.

The demon was already getting to its feet, although the arrow seemed to be causing it some pain. The other, however, had turned away, growling as it sniffed the air. It scented something and darted off into the night, down an alleyway and towards the street where Hiroyuki was walking.

If he still didn't notice the conflict, the second demon would burst out of the alleyway, teeth bared, leaping at him.

"Oh man," Hiroyuki mused to himself while laughing stupidly, "I think she waved to me at one point~" Laughing without a concern in the world, the Senki student remained completely oblivious to the unfolding situation. So much so that as he turned the corner, he never imagined dog-like demon hurtling forth from the alleyway.

To Hiroyuki, it seemed like a bolt of lighting. He had only a second to mumbled out a "Huh?" before the creature streaked by slashing across his arm with its razor-sharp fangs. Wincing, Hiroyuki placed a hand over the torn sleeve of his shirt; regrettably, one he had just bought at the concert. He turned, now imminently aware of the danger, and faced the snarling beast as his eyes darted around seeking the possibility that there could be more.

"Easy there, boy," Hiroyuki spoke to the creature more as a natural reaction while his mind processed the sudden situation, "Awww, man... I just bought this and now you ruined it... I mean... I guess I can cut the sleeves off, but that look just doesn't fit me ya know." It seemed unlikely that it was the only one. Hiroyuki had quite a bit of experience with yokai and demon-like creatures, so he felt like trusting his gut feeling was a pretty safe bet.

"Be a good boy and run on home, okay?" he addressed the creature in a playful but pleading tone treating the monster as if it were actually a pet that could be more easily reasoned with. This was merely a feint, however. Hiroyuki knew the demon dog would come again, but this time he was ready.

It would be the creature's turn to be caught off-guard. Or so Hiroyuki hoped...

Abel's eyes widened as the streak of pure light shot passed him, knocking the demon back on its haunches briefly. He listened intently to the newcomer's words.

That was a pretty cool entrance, he had to admit...

But he didn't let it show.

The lights around then dimmed as Abel's arms sword materialized fully in his grasp, slowly sucking away at the light particles around them. Abel turned his head enough to get a look at the one who'd fired it, narrowing his eyes. More magic from the looks of it, devilry he didn't have time for right now. Not with that thing readying itself for a follow up attack.

He pressed his glasses against his face and turned away from the archer, preparing his sword for an attack of its own. The blade glowed with a spectacular array of rainbow colors dancing upon the face like a trapped aurora.

"You should worry about yourself." His knuckles tightened around the grip and the blade of light shone brighter in response. "The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." He spoke aloud to himself. Raising his sword, Abel let loose two swift strikes at the air, sending rippling slashes of super heated air which shimmered like a heat mirage towards the demon. He charged immediately behind the blast, rushing the monster with a flying leap.

He'd cut it right down the middle!

"How thoughtful of you," the archer said, his tone tinged with the slightest amount of sarcasm. He didn't lower his bow, instead observing as Abel attacked. With his free hand, he drew a small piece of paper out of his robes, holding it between two fingers. A flick of his fingers sent the little paper, cut in the rough shape of a human, flying through the air, imbued with power as it took off after the demon that had run away.

Abel's strikes struck the demon just as it was rising to its feet, the twin slashes of superheated air hitting the creature head on and forcing its face to the side. It slid back, its claws carving furrows in the asphalt. For a moment, as the swordsman rushed in, it would look like his gambit had worked, but then the creature raised its head.

A flame burned in the demon's eyes, a flame as bright and as hot as the heat that Abel had sent towards it. If Abel looked closely as he neared, he might notice that the demon did not seem harmed by the blasts. Instead, waves of heat rippled outward from the creature, small sparks of fire appearing just beneath its claws.

Those sparks would have been Abel's only warning.

As he neared, aiming to cut the creature in half, the demon opened its mouth and let out a savage sounding bark, a gout of fire spewing from its mouth and shooting at Abel head-on.

Hiroyuki, meanwhile, would get his wish. The demon paused only for a moment to turn towards him, growling menacingly, before it lowered itself to its haunches and charged, leaping at him again. It didn't seem to be capable of much more thought or strategy than that. In the mage standing before him, it saw only blood.

Blood and power.

If Hiroyuki were paying attention, however, he might notice the little shikigami that hovered over the scene, watching. The power that surrounded it was exorcism magic, sharp and clear and bright, but this shikigami hadn't come to attack, only to observe, to mark the demon's position and report back to its master.

Then again, it was entirely possible that he might not notice such a small thing, not with the bigger threat charging at him.

Abel's eyes met with the demon's as he sailed through the air, its canine gaze bleeding its killing intent over the young swordsman. Although Abel himself could scarcely read such non verbal cues, he felt the alarm bells tingling from The base of his spine, the chip implanted there screaming danger. However, stuck mid-flight as he was, there was no time to change direction. Only one chance...!

The beast belched fire in red-torrent, engulfing him in a bellyful of smoking tendrils. The force sent him careening back, smoke and steam rising from his singed clothing, the edges of his scarf and hair smouldering with tiny embers. He bounced painfully off the pavement, skidding to an unceremonious halt at the mysterious archer's feet.

Abel groaned, toasted, but very much alive. A blast of his own hot air fired at the last minute probably saved his life but did not spare him an ounce of pain. He rolled himself into his stomach and used his streaming blade to pull himself up. His hands, thanks to the gloves he used to wield his Joyeuse, were probably the only part of him that came out unscathed. Ironic, somehow.

"V-Verdammte Tier..." He moaned, positioning himself in front of the archer and holding up his sword defensively. He turned his head slightly to look at him, his eyes reflecting concern hidden behind a thin veneer of bravado. "Tell me archer, is this d-demon your enemy? Tell me how to defeat it."

Though he didn't wish to admit it, and he'd never tell anyone this was so, but this was actually his first time facing a real opponent. If he was being honest with himself, deep down, embarrassing as it was for someone who claimed so much faith, he was frightened, terrified even, of this trial.

"Figures," Hiroyuki sighed as he began to brace himself for the devil dog's charge. If he had been more alert, he likely would have taken note of the Shikigami but for the moment he needed all his focus to protect himself. Little did the creature know, but Hiroyuki's hand covering where he had been cut was already granting him exactly what he needed; a connection to the blood.

"I tried to warn you!" Hiroyuki shouted back to the beast as it began its charge with crackles of crimson energy darting around his hand, "Take this!" It was fast, supernaturally so but that should have been obvious. Hiroyuki gave the thing a few moments to get its momentum up before drawing his hand forward. Mumbling a few odd words, a crimson light flashed upon the blood gathered on his fingertips. Shouting out, Hiroyuki caused the blood to form together and lance forth as it took the shape of a long spear hoping to run the creature through in mid-air.

"Man, how lame," Hiroyuki thought to himself in frustration, "Can't even enjoy the aftermath of that concert." He probably should have been more concerned about his situation, but couldn't seem to get past the intrusion this ravenous creature had caused.

Hiroyuki's spear struck the demon's chest at an angle, piercing the skin and knocking it out of its charge. Demon and spear fell backwards through the air in an arc, the spear impaling the demon and pinning it to the ground. The creature snarled and thrashed in mindless pain, jaws snapping on empty air and paws churning the emptiness as it tried to push itself up, to turn its head towards Hiroyuki. Its roars and snarls filled the air.

There was no intelligence in the creature's eyes, only hatred and malice, bloodlust and anger. It looked like the fight was all but over, like the demon was just too stupid to know when it had been beaten.

Already its thrashing was beginning to weaken, its life ebbing away, although it did make one last effort to snarl at Hiroyuki, opening its mouth and letting a gout of flame loose towards the mage.

In the shadows, the little shikigami observed, and reported.

"Interesting..." the archer said, not towards Abel, but to no one in particular.

His gaze was far off, and he barely seemed to notice Abel until the archer landed in a heap at his feet. The man did step backwards then, but only just far enough to stop Abel--and any residual flames--from knocking into him. At the swordsman's query though, the man smirked, fitting his arrow to his bowstring again.

"Well," he said, "In the first place, though the effort is commendable, fire and heat do very little to these creatures. They have a strong connection to flames themselves."

The demon began to prowl its way towards them, puffs of smoke winding their way out of its mouth. It opened its mouth again, that terrible heat glowing in its eyes, and launched another burst of fire towards them.

Without missing a beat, the archer reached into his robe and drew out another talisman, tossing it at the flames. The calligraphy on the talisman glowed as it hovered in the air between them and the fire, forming a dome-shaped shield that deflected the flames to either side of it, harmlessly. The archer raised the bow, drawing string and arrow back towards his ear.

"For creatures like this, I'm afraid, the best way to destroy them is with light. To burn them away completely."

He loosed the arrow. It flew through the air, piercing the shield talisman and carrying both that talisman and the one already speared into it forward, through the smoke and the fire. Flames parted as the arrow soared straight into the creature's open mouth. Powers clashed and exploded, a blast that knocked the creature straight off its feet.

The fire died down.

Abel watched and listened intently as the mysterious stranger spoke and notched a second arrow just as he had the first. Believer or unbeliever, the man seemed to be speaking the truth. As the beast circled them cautiously, he turned his attention back to their shared opponent and prepared himself for a second assault. That tingling feeling was now a scream as it gathered smoke in its belly the same as it had before. His legs tensed, ready for the belching flames, but the sound of a straining bowstring gave him pause.

He turned back to look at the archer, as calm and collected as collected as Abel pretended to be. And clearly rooted to the spot. So he didn't intend to dodge it? Abel's eyes went wide as the sound of screaming flames and the accompanying heat splashed across his senses. His head turned on a swivel, his pupils burning under the light and heat as the fire bore down on them.

The quiet flick of a loosed arrow some cut through the din, as the arrow itself cut through the flames.

Just as quickly as it appeared, everything returned to quiet, to starlight and smoke. Abel visibly relaxed, his tense shoulders sinking comfortably and squarely with his chest. The demon lay in a smouldering heap. Wordlessly, he limped to its side, clearly slain as it took its final breaths in long, burdened sighs. Abel's brow furrowed as he looked it over.

He punched his sword into the pavement beside it and clasped his hands in prayer. "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." Abel took up his sword and turned back to face the man who had saved him.

"Thank you for your help, stranger. I might have lost more than my pride if you hadn't shown up when you did." He said, pressing his glasses to his face with one finger. He was grateful, and alive. Who knew battles could be like this? In spite of his cool demeanor, his hands were still trembling.

"Uwooooh~" Hiroyuki stumbled to the side doing his best to avoid the gout of flames that suddenly rushed from the demon dog's maw. Unfortunately, his eyes could only shoot wide with shock as the torrent razed his shoulder igniting the shirt he was wearing. Panicking, Hiroyuki quickly worked the shirt off and tossed it aside watching it began burning up into nothingness.

It was the concert shirt he had purchased. Excited for the idol performance, he had just thrown it on over his normal shirt in a sign of support. Concert Exclusive. Limited Edition. Now, it was burning to nothing before him. Hiroyuki had an unusually muted expression upon his face. Slowly, he turned back to regard the creature still pinned to the ground as his glasses seemed to glaze over with an aura of darkness.

"UNFORGIVABLE!" Hiroyuki shouted with pathetic frustration, "That was limited edition! But you can't even appreciate that, can you?!"

Shouting way too loud for this late at night in the Suburban District, Hiroyuki began a run towards his foe intent on finishing it off. He altered the angle of his approach just enough to not be in the direct line of fire should another blast of flames rush out. When he got in close, Hiroyuki grasped the handle of the spear he had created and with all his might tore up and forward hoping to rip it out of the creature and slash across in one swift motion.

It was the type of move he would have never felt confident about attempting in the past, but under Tommy's guidance, Hiroyuki was slowly grasping the basic concepts of how to fight. At least enough to finish off an already wounded monster. "They sold out at the show!" Hiroyuki charged his opponent with no care for its understanding, "It's not like I can just go buy another one!"

The archer said nothing as Abel approached the dying demon to pray, but his eyes narrowed slightly, his expression growing impatient as he watched the scene unfold. His eyes moved over the demon, and if Abel happened to look back at that exact moment, he would see something burning in the man's visible eye. Hatred.

"They can't be saved," the stranger said, when Abel raised his head. "They can't be cleansed. The only thing that you can do is destroy them."

As if to make his point clear, he fit another arrow to his bowstring, firing it at the struggling demon. The arrow struck it in the head, between the eyes, and the demon's head jerked back once before the entire creature began to smolder, burning away to dust and ash.

The archer looked back at Abel, and in an instant, the hatred was gone from his face, his features taking on their earlier smugness. "There's no need to thank me," he said. "You have some potential, although you're inexperienced. What is your name?"

A feeling of dread washed over them suddenly, fear and darkness and, if Abel had any magical senses whatsoever, the unmistakable crackling of a spell being cast. The archer immediately tensed. His eyes narrowed, and he looked back over his shoulder. "Perhaps we should save this conversation for later," he said. "We're about to have company."

Hiroyuki's spear cut through the creature, tearing straight through it. Before his eyes, the dying demon dissolved into spectral flames, its eyes glowing in the air a moment more before they too vanished, leaving him alone on the street once more. For a moment, it would be still and silent, the only sound being the wind moving through the streets and alleyways.

In the stillness, the air was filled with the lingering tang of magic. The exorcism magic that came from the archer's arrows, not too far from where Hiroyuki was standing, and the pinprick of magic coming from the shikigami that was now retreating, heading back towards his master. It seemed like the fight was over.

And then the air filled with power again.

If Hiroyuki were paying attention, he would notice it. Dark magic, converging on one location, one street down from him where the archer and Abel were waiting.

A summoning spell.

"What the hell is going on?" Hiroyuki mused with a twinge of anger as he dismissed the spear and looked at the pile of ash that his limited edition t-shirt had become. Granted, he was angry but those words weren't about the shirt. All around him he could sense it. Magic here and there. Somewhere close by, but it was growing faint. Somewhere nearby maybe a block or two elsewhere. This wasn't your typical nightly stroll through the sleepy suburban district.

And then he sensed it. All at once like some explosion had gone off. While he was not the most powerful wizard by any means, Hiroyuki understood its applications better than most. It was a powerful type of dark magic. That added up because it made more sense to imagine the beast that attacked him was summoned rather than somehow just roaming Kaneshima freely. But this was something more. Power like this wouldn't just summon one stray devil dog. Either there was about to be a whole armada of the things or something much worse was coming.

He thought better about closing the wound the creature had caused and instead simply broke into a run heading towards the surging energy that he had sensed. If that thing was summoned... if someone was still summoning now... by relation it meant they were responsible for his shirt fiasco. This was how he justified it to himself, in any case. Deep down he knew this situation meant trouble. He could walk on, but he had learned since coming to Kaneshima just how terrible inaction or hesitation could be.

And so he pressed on as fast as his legs could carry him, charting a course directly towards the source of the dark magic. Eyes locked with focus and determination, Hiroyuki turned the corner ready to greet the source of this chaos...

Abel was stopped cold at the man's expression, the burning behind his eyes. Whatever these demons were, he clearly had some experience with them and it had left behind a palpable bitterness. Abel adjusted his glasses as best he could with his shaking fingers and managed the slightest hint of a smile.

"With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God." He quoted, in part as an answer to the man's assertion that any being could not be saved, but also as a response to the clear hatred itself. It did not do well to let that fester like that inside one's heart. Now wasn't the time to ask questions about that, and he decided not to pry.

"I'm called Abelhard Priester, but it's fine to just call me Abel. It's nice of you to say so even though I was pretty useless just now..." Abel rubbed the back of his neck, trying not to look as embarrassed as he felt. If his father had seen him performing like that on the battlefield, there'd have been no end to the scoldings and punishment drills. As it was, he'd have to chastise himself in his father's absence.

However, he snapped to at the same time the archer pointed it out, that sinister wind on the air. Abel had never felt anything like that in person before. Something truly not of God. The chip in his neck fizzled and hummed inside his thoughts, but the unease in his spirit seemed even louder. Gripping his sword he held it at the ready, turning to face whatever evil approached. Taking a deep breath, he chanted quietly to himself...

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Whatever came next, it would not be doubt that defeated him today.

The archer's lip quirked in a smile as Abel spoke, as if he thought that Abel was being incredibly naive, but that that naivete was somehow endearing. "Abel," he said, the foreign name sounding odd on his tongue, "That's an interesting name. I've read about what happened to your Abel. You should make sure that you don't face the same fate."

He fit another arrow to his bow, glancing to the left as a small paper being shot out of an alleyway, flying towards him. "My name is Matoba Seiji. We're about to have company."

As if in answer to his cryptic statement, Hiroyuki would arrive, coming from the same direction as the shikigami. Abel might wonder if Hiroyuki was the threat that they faced, but Matoba barely gave the mage a glance. Instead, his eyes were fixed straight ahead of him, into the darkness gathering beneath a streetlight.

Something tore through the fabric of reality, one after another. Two gashes appeared in the air ahead of them, swirling shadows at their heart. Those more attuned to magic and its use would sense the clear intention that had been woven into them, further proof of what Hiroyuki had already assessed. This wasn't random. These creatures were being summoned.

But the summoner was nowhere in sight.

Matoba 'hmm'ed in consideration, raising his bow as two creatures appeared, pulling themselves out of the rents in reality. An oni, carrying a sword, and some sort of spider creature. He drew the string back, preparing to loose another arrow.

"Are you the ones who-" Hiroyuki began addressing Abel and Seiji the second he turned the corner and saw them. But his words were cut short as a sensation of supernatural energy pulled his focus. No, it wasn't them. But it was someone... or, perhaps, some thing. As the two creatures began to appear, Hiroyuki shifted his facing to look towards them while backing up to be closer to the other two.

"They're being summoned," Hiroyuki explained having no frame of reference to assume what the others might know, "The Summoner can't be too far away. We should watch out, this may only be the first wave. Name's Hiroyuki." Perhaps it was a bit presumptuous to lump the three of them in together. Still, it was clear these other two were fit for fighting and given their gaze towards the materializing creatures it was pretty obvious where the battle lines were drawn.

A stray beast was one thing. Not only were there multiple things now, but they were bigger and worse looking. Hiroyuki knew he couldn't hope to take them on by himself so it was really the only option. He could run, perhaps. A vendetta over a shirt was a childish grudge to hold. But what was the end goal of the opposition here? Summoning monsters into the Suburban District was surely a plan with sinister means. Hiroyuki couldn't let himself walk away knowing others might get hurt.

"Hm? Why do you say that? If I could live a devoted life as Abel did that was pleasing to the Lord, I could live and die without worry." Abel said in earnest confusion. That seemed to him to be a strange suggestion. Abel was the first saint to be persecuted and killed, sure, but he was ultimately rewarded for his faithful sacrifice and. "Actually," he continued, "I read an interesting dissertation on Genesis 4 which suggested that--"

Abel was cut off by Seiji's warning, and the boy jumped to attention, gripping his sword tightly just as another boy rounded the corner.

The enemy?

No, just another person caught in the crossfire like they were, apparently.

"I'm called Abelhard. Be careful, these things don't die easily to certain kinds of attacks." He said, happy to share the information Seiji had offered him just moments before. Hopefully, these new monsters didn't have the same resistance. Ultimately, he might have to use that technique if he wanted to keep fighting and have a chance.

Still, with three of them together, they hopefully stood a decent shot at victory.

Abel steadied himself and picked out his target. The tall one, he'd take it sword against sword. "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes." He chanted, readying himself to attack. With a furious cry he charged, swinging his steaming blade twice in wide, firey arcs. The shimmering heat shot forward ahead of him, hopefully leaving him an opening for his real attack.

As he drew close, he targeted the oni's right knee. A creature that tall would be weakest in its joints if physics still applied to demons...

"Interesting," Matoba said, in response to Hiroyuki's comment. His brow furrowed, some of the smugness leaving his expression as he started to scan the area around the creatures. If Hiroyuki searched for the source of the summoning, he would only be able to tell that the spell was coming from somewhere close by - its exact location eluded detection.

Matoba freed a pair of shikigami from within his robes, sending the spirits off as Abel charged the oni. The little paper creatures shot off into the dark, moving past their foes in twin streaks of light. Matoba's attention seemed focused on them for the moment, leaving Abel and Hiroyuki to deal with their foes' opening strikes.

The oni bent its knees against Abel's charge, raising its sword and bracing its free hand on the flat as the arcs of shimmering heat crashed against it. It sliced through the arcs, parting them, as Abel charged forward, aiming for its knee. For a moment, it seemed as though Abel's gambit would be effective, but then the oni turned its head, eyes fixing on the swordsman. With a fluid movement that should not have been possible for something so large, the oni swept its leg backward and turned its body to the side, raising its own sword over its head. It swung downward, attempting to catch Abel in a powerful cut while the swordsman was moving, committed to striking a target that was no longer there.

The spider, meanwhile, had turned its attention towards Hiroyuki. Unlike the oni, it didn't charge. Instead, it remained at a distance, spreading its legs out to either side of it. A wave of crackling power ran through it, forming into a bolt of lightning that streaked towards the mage. It was as if the spider had seen how easily Hiroyuki had dispatched the first demon and was testing the waters, keeping a cautious distance.

"Gotcha," Hiroyuki replied rather nonchalantly to Abel's words. Guy seemed like he was some kind of exorcist or something. Hiroyuki could only hope so. His more silent companion seemed to fall into the same rank. Or rather, he clearly recognized the shikigami for what they were and it was easy enough to reach a conclusion based on that.

This was good because he really had no clue what was going on. The source of the energy behind the summoning was too hard to pinpoint. His slacker nature with regards to his time at the Tower of Fang suddenly echoed in his mind. Maybe he should have taken things seriously. It didn't matter now. He just had to do what he could to help out.

"Oh uhhh," Hiroyuki began nervously as the spider-like creature seemed to single him out, "Hey uh... spider... thing... I don't suppose we could negotiate? I hear that's a thing some of you guys get into so-" It was worth a shot, right? The last time Hiroyuki had desperately tried to talk out of a fight it actually swung things in his favor and he won without ever having to lift a finger. If only all conflicts could be resolved in such a way.

But that hope, along with Hiroyuki's words, was cut short by the sudden blast of lightning rushing in the blood mage's direction. Abel had already flung himself into battle with the Oni. It seemed the path of negotiation was closed before it could be explored. Gritting his teeth, Hiroyuki dove to the side as best he could narrowly avoiding being zapped though it was due more to sheer luck than any sort of actual skill.

"Why do I always get the fun ones?" Hiroyuki mused to himself internally as he scrambled back up to his feet. It was testing him, Hiroyuki thought. The thing was pretty big and no doubt deadly when up close. And yet it was choosing a careful ranged attack while keeping its distance. He couldn't blame the thing. It was a smart decision and in most cases that was the style Hiroyuki took towards these things.

"HIIIIIIIYAAAAAA!!!!" Hiroyuki shouted as he leveled the spear tip towards the creature and began to dash forward running with all his might. But he thought he could not afford to play a cat and mouse game with this creature. The Summoner was still out there and that meant, potentially, they could be doing this all night. Better to blitz the thing and try to throw it off. If left unchecked, Hiroyuki would lunge forward and try to thrust the spear into the beast.

Though being Hiroyuki, he anticipated a reaction and it would be at that moment that a true opportunity would arrive.
