There are some places in the world that act as magnets. They give off a field uniquely their own and quite often untraceable by any known or unknown methods. These places exhibit this magnetism, or perhaps gravitation if you will, in an ever expanding manner, but are only able to exert these forces on certain individuals.

An example of such a place would be a late night hot-dog cart. No one knows where it appears and yet it is always there just a street or 2 down from a club or bar and these same people would swear it was never there before, or that it was usually a street over and they never intended to find themselves being pleasantly coerced by said cart vendor into buying food to fill their stomach at such a late time of night.

This is but a small example. A larger one would be Kaneshima Broadway. For it would only be through this pull of unseen forces, that would find Nickle Ryuko standing in the middle of a walkway, looking at the broadway in all its glory. He had not planned to come here, he did not even know where in the city this place was, only having arrived recently with his wife Chizu.

Yet to bring a the tech-mad electromancer to this place in such a way was more than just chance. It was a force of nature all its own. Nickle stood gob-smacked, finally having looked up from the text message he was sending to see where he was. At this very moment, looking into a computer and gaming store, while next door lay a manga shop and further down a maid cafe'.

The electromancer beamed, "Well hot dang!" he ran off to a nearby walkway bridge that would give him a better vantage point of the area amidst all the hustle and bustle that was going on. It was a spectacle. Nickle leaned over the railing, his thunderbolt pendant dandling slightly away from him as the big man took in the scene.

Chizu and he had only done the bare necessities in regards to shopping since they had arrived. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to return home with some decorations or entertainment for the house?

"Oh man...but where to start?" he said more to himself than anyone else as he looked around.

"Well, the electronics stores have some nice deals at the moment, if you're looking for what you're looking for." a cheerful face said from behind him.

It wasn't entirely clear when the young woman had gotten there, but she certainly seemed familiar enough with the place.

Her clothes - a light beige coat jacket, dark skirt, and fashionable looking boots - were the sort you might see from someone in the trendier part of Shinjuku during the season, and her expression was certainly a lot more welcoming and friendly than the usual Japanese attitude of mind-your-own-business.

"Oh, apologies, I didn't startle you did I?"

Nickle blinked and turned as a young female voice started responding to his undirected question. She was quite shorter than him, although this was the case for most people, she was on the shorter end of that spectrum. Admittedly he was mildly surprised at her response and appearance, but not to the point that he visibly showed it.

"You don't say? That's certainly good to know, but what gave it away that I was thinking of getting electronics in the first place?" Nickle grinned and motioned to some nearby cafe's. "I could have been debating where to get a bite to eat."

Nickle turned to face her, giving the girl a proper look at what he was wearing. The most prominent was the lightning bolt on the end of a chain around his neck. As for his clothing it consisted of a brown jacket, jeans, a pair of black boots concealed by said jeans an a t-shirt that was emblazoned with a cloud with a silver streak on it and the wording 'Find the silver!'.

The electromancer gave the idol a winning smile of sheer friendliness and excitement of meeting someone new, "Apologies miss, you didn't startle me, but you did surprise me a bit with how you snuck up on me." Nickle extended a hand, his jacket sleeves having been pulled up slightly to the middle of his forearms.

"The name's Nickle. What brings you here today Miss...?" Nickle let the opening hang in the air for Hibiki to fill in if she chose. It would become apparent that, although she held idol status, Nickle's travelling with Chizu around the world and often to the remote parts of it, was clearly showing he was unaware of any fame she may have had.

"Because this place is famous for those." she answered.

The restaurants weren't bad, but by and large, this part of the city was known mostly for an ever-expanding range of shops that catered to hobbyist and professional alike in terms of electronics and entertainment goods.

Hibiki took his hand. Good, she thought.

He didn't recognise her. This made everything easier.

"Ah right, my manners." Hibiki said, looking mildly embarassed "Akechi Hibiki. I do production work, so I drop by here a lot to look at new equipment."

It wasn't exactly a lie - Technically, being an idol singer was indeed production work, though generally not the first thing that might come to mind. Usually that title was claimed by people who worked behind the scenes, like editors and sound crews.

"You're new to the city I take it?"

Nickle let his eyebrow raise slightly and for a moment let himself have a proper look at the people that were bustling around them and noting that while, indeed much of the crowd seem like regular people, there were also those who were carrying very expensive parts, electronic and machinery of various sizes and then another sect that seemed to hug the walls and the doorways of certain shops, some of which were advertising a specialist type of hobbyist paraphernalia.

Nickle took Hibiki's hand and shook it gingerly, the girl's hand being dwarfed in his own. After the handshake, he let his own hand come to rest on his hip as she told Nickle her name, but even that did not cause a spark of recognition. "Oh really? For the entertainment industry? And you're so young too!" Admiration was written across Nickle's face, although to some people at this point, they would have made the connection that a someone of high school age, working this young in entertainment may not exactly be working behind the scenes or even as an intern.

This deductive reasoning did not come to Nickle as he continued with his response. "Hah, that obvious is it? But yes it is. I just moved here recently with my wife and I decided to have a look around the city." Nickle made a motion with his hand to indicate that he wanted to start walking and that he wanted Hibiki to walk and talk with him.

Some people may have found it a very brazen thing to do, but Nickle had always been like that and chose to ignore social convention at times or rather in this case, not even think he would possibly be doing something wrong, a married man walking around with a younger girl.

"I have to say Kaneshima continues to impress me. So much to offer and yet still somewhat of a hidden gem. Are you a local yourself? Or did you also move here?" Hibiki seemed to know the area and as such Nickle thought her to be a long time resident, or at least had been in the city long enough to blend in to it.

If Hibiki had any objections, she certainly didn't voice them. If anything, she seemed all too happy to pass time this way.

"Well, you have a look about you like you're not used to the place yet." she said, having the grace to not mention that he looked like a tourist.

There were certain tells when people were unfamiliar with where they were. Making statements like Oh man...but where to start? were chiefly among them.

"A lot of the people here are new. The city didn't really take off until the new high school started construction, then it exploded almost overnight from all the investment." she explained. "Before that, it was a pretty sleepy town."

"Anyway, the company I work for started moving operations here, so here I am. They moved about half the major staffers, and hired locally to fill in the rest. A lot of businesses did the same thing, so it's been quite a boom I think. Still, there's a lot of parts where you can still feel the older city beneath that."

Nickle sighed at Hibiki's response. Here he thought moving back to Japan would make him seem more at home and yet he was still sticking out like a sore thumb. Well for the moment at any rate. "I guess nothing's changed. I'm used to it though, I've been globe-trotting the past few years with my wife, but hopefully we'll start to look more local soon." The big man gave a short laugh at his own ironic misfortune, but did not seem upset at all by it.

When Hibiki began to mention the high school, Nickle's eyebrow raised slightly and a somewhat knowing smirk that seemed to speak volumes came onto his face. After all, working for SERAPH gave him some insight as to how the teens who were attending the high school were being monitored and looked after, to a degree at any rate. They weren't being left to run amok, but not exactly policed either. "Now see, you mentioning that doesn't surprise me at all Hibiki-chan. Certain high schools seem to have a knack for garnering all kinds of attention. Some kind of magnetism to it." Although while it was a boon for the city as Hibiki had said, there were some kinds of things that were attracted to the places like Senki that were anything but good.

---------------------

As he and Hibiki walked through the crowd on the bridge, they began to make their way down the stairs and towards the main area of foot traffic on the broadway. As they began descending the stairs, unbeknownst to them both, someone had been watching them. He wasn't exactly hiding, rather blending into the crowd that moved around him, hugging close to a pillar, staying in its shadow and standing very still. Most people often don't realize that if you just stand still, you can unfocus yourself and appear as if you had vanished.

"He's moving. Someone is with him. Where are you? For god's sake please tell me you're at least dressed discreet." The man seemed to be speaking softly, into or through what was not discernible. Neither was the reply. He grit his teeth, apparently annoyed, and turned to vanish behind the pillar as he moved to maintain a covert visual of Hibiki and Nickle.

Meanwhile, Nickle had finished listening to Hibiki about how her company had been starting things up here and planting firm roots so that they could get down to work. He let out an appreciative whistle, "Sounds like a big company, congrats to you on finding yourself a spot. If you don't mind me asking, who do you work for? Like the company, or your boss?" It was asked with a genuine interest, unlike some people who were looking for names to be dropped so that they could possibly find some new work for themselves. If there was one thing Hibiki would start to notice, is that Nickle seemed very direct in his approach to a lot of matters, but not in a forceful way.

---------------------

From another part of the area, in a secluded side alley within an alley, a square of dark violet energy the size of a door opened out of thing air. A man wearing white came through it. "You just sit tight and don't worry. We've got all the time in the world."

"Shirotsu Productions. We've become fairly popular these days, so it can get pretty busy."

Shirotsu - generally written as 762. A company that, since it's purchase by the Frostfire corporation some years ago, had since been converted into a major production studio with facilities across the country and commitments around the world, effectively acting as both a talent agency and the company's media division in Japan.

The group had even recently had successful tours outside of Japan, with trips to China and Southeast Asia in the previous year, and budding popularity prompting international distribution of their material.

The girl stopped and seemed thoughtful for a moment, her eyes flitting about as if to confirm where she was.

"Come to think of it, it seems a good time for tea isn't it?" she said, seemingly out of the blue as she started moving in an odd direction away from the crowd, trying to coax her companion along "There's actually a place pretty close by with some nice blends. Come, it's one of those nice little cozy places that doesn't get enough attention, but the atmosphere is great because of that."

Nickle grinned in appreciation for the clear enthusiasm that glowed on Hibiki's face as she spoke about the company she worked for. The name seemed...familiar, but he couldn't really place it as to where. Possibly the odd magazine or newspaper in a waiting room or bar. Maybe an online article or two during those times he and Chizu had had an internet connection. There were plenty of times when they were in areas so remote that signal coverage did not exist.

"Well I'll count my blessing then to have been able to make your acquaintance on your day off then!" said Nickle, looking equally pleased and enthused. He continued to walk alongside Hibiki, pausing when he noticed the girl seemed to be trying to get her bearings, or possibly spotted something or someone she recognized. "Everything alright Hibiki-san?"

---------------------

The figure who had been hugging the crowd was now standing amidst a series of banners and standing advertisements, a demo area of some kind for new products. Not as shadowed as the pillar had been, but allowing him to hide in plain sight. The purveyors of goods did not even notice him, recognizing him as a customer who was indeed just there to look at there wares, or more accurately, stand there not looking at all and taking up space. "They've stopped. The girl's spotted something. Have we been made?"

The man's partner chuckled, "Not possible. I doubt she's a threat and even if she was, she has no idea who we even are or why we're here. Though she'd make a good bargaining chip." The late arrival sounded quite casual about matters and there seemed to be some chatter going on around him.

"What's the ruckus, where are you?"

"Look to your right."

The first man turned his attention to the opposite end of the plaza and spotted his partner, standing amidst a crowd of people who were...gawking? Good heaven gawking, fanboying and girling and generally clamouring for his attention. He grit his teeth.

"This is supposed to be covert!"

"What? I blend right in. They must think my clothes are some kind of cosplay. Its not unusual around here. Can't help that I have style."

"Ditch them! Those two are on the move!"

---------------------

Nickle perked up at the mention of a drink. Any food or drink suggestion was a sure win in Nickle's book. Simple pleasures were one that rarely failed to please. Hibiki did not really need to put much effort to coax Nickle into following her, "That sounds excellent! I like those little discreet cafe's and restaurants. Make everything feel more homey. Lead one Hibiki-san."

The electromancer followed the girl, unbeknown that from either side a pair of sharks were silently swimming through the crowds of people. Admittedly one had to go into a much larger crowd to lose the one that was following him, but that was the beauty of being an apex predator. You could move uninhibited by those around you.

The path taken was... lively to say the least, going through several of the tight, twisting and narrow paths that Japanese suburban construction was infamous for. It was a bit of a legacy from before the city had really grown. The shops may have changed, but its layout still bore the marks of old construction.

Going this way and that, she seemed to be going about almost at random despite the firm and steady look of someone who knew exactly where she was going, until slowly the ratio of specialty cafes around them exceeded that of various merchandise shops, though she seemed to steer away from the ones that had posters with her face on it.

"Ah sorry about that, I usually have a quick look at the shops on the way. You never know when something interesting will pop up." she said apologetically.

Nickle followed Hibiki closely, trying to avoid shoving through the press of people as they made their way to the cafe' that Hibiki was taking him to. It wasn't all that difficult to keep track of her in the crowd, for the most part Nickle was one of the tallest in the human traffic. While this let him keep track of Hibiki, it also meant that his pursuers could spot him from afar, although they weren't exactly having an easier time following in the crowds. At best, keeping up was all they could do.

Nickle followed the roundabout route that Hibiki was taking and began to notice the change in services around them. Much more focused on cuisine and less on wholesale. "Ah please don't worry about it Hibiki-san." said Nickle waving his hand in a slightly nonchalant way. He had not perhaps been taking in what Hibiki had been seeing, his eyes noticing interesting bargains and places to double-back on later.

He did however notice something, for all of Hibiki's attempts to avoid them. A poster with her face on it. It was slightly hidden behind a stand of postcards and other take-away souvenirs, which Nickle proceeded to move out of the way and get a better look. "You're right there Hibiki-san. Something interesting is lurking everywhere, right?"

Nickle was sniggering a bit to himself on the last work, before moving the thing he'd moved back into place. He looked Hibiki in a slightly different way now, having read what was on the poster. "Entertainment industry huh?" said Nickle with a slightly appraising look. He gave Hibiki a reassuring wink. He had not started shouting out that she was a famous idol and was not about to do so in such a crowded place. "Congrats to you then on your good work. Don't worry, I'm not going to make a big fuss over you here in public, but maybe we can discuss it over some food."

As if on cue, Nickle's stomach began to growl loudly enough for Hibiki to hear it above the drone of the area. He blushed and grinned, "Is the place you were thinking of nearby? I could really do with getting something in the tank."

"Oh, so you noticed." she grinned sheepishly. "Well, it's not really a secret, but it's a bit of a bother sometimes when I want to walk around."

While celebrities spotted in public was nothing new, it was also a headache she preferred to avoid if possible. She took a few more steps, rounding a corner to a quieter part of the area.

"Anyway, this is the place." she said, pointing out a simple, unadorned wooden door. The sign simply read The Amber Teahouse. "It's a nice and quiet place, but almost noone ever seems to visit. Come~"

A chime sounded as she pushed the door open, leading Nickle inside.

It was a fairly cozy looking place, with a clean wooden counter, behind which was row upon row of tins, adorned with labels for various blends and plantations, and various tea sets of glass, tin and porcelain.

There certainly wasn't much of a crowd, or a staff - or for that matter, any patrons. Just a neatly dressed young lady sweeping behind the counter, who turned at the sound of the door.

"Welcome!" she greeted with a polite bow.

Nickle's eyes widened for a moment as he looked at Hibiki. She looked...somehow different than before. More dazzling. The effect was short lived, but oddly enough it somehow felt like he was seeing her...properly? It was an odd way to describe it, but that's how it was. Like he was seeing Hibiki clearly. Nickle did not dwell too much on it, "I can imagine. It must be hard being famous. Though there must be moments with perks, otherwise what's the point, right?"

As they found the teahouse, Nickle took a moment to look at the surroundings and commit them to memory. It would be a nice place to bring Chizu on a quiet date night. He followed Hibiki happily and took in the interior. The girl wans't kidding, cozy and quiet. One might he was here in this out of the way cafe' with Hibiki to do something nefarious. Well at least the tabloids and gossip magazines would if they were spotted together. Still the place was just its own little world of perfection.

Nickle bowed in response to the young lady who greeted them, "Pardon us. I don't suppose you've got any room for the two of us do you?" Nickle said in a joking tone and grinned at Hibiki in an attempt to get a small laugh out of the girl.

---------------------

Their pursuers had made it through the crowds, having nearly lost them the way the girl had been leading Nickle this way and that. But they spotted the teahouse. Finally a corner to block into and an angle to work.

"Alright, I'm going to go in, you wait here in case he gets in the way and makes a break for it."

"Just make sure you move quickly. The second I start causing a ruckus he's going to start acting up and see what's going on outside. You need to grab her at that moment."

"Out of interest, did you get any response on the girl he's with?"

"Not yet, but we don't need to worry, I know who she is."

"Wait, you do?"

The taller of the two pointed to a posted on a nearby wall standing on its own. There were group of girls dancing on a stage at a concert and among them stood Hibiki.

As they both looked on, the thought occurred to them simultaneously that a high profile hostage could cause more of a stir and get more attention. But judging from the look in the eye of the taller of the two, it just meant a bigger commotion would need to be caused to scare people away.

"Alright, I'm going in. Get ready."

"You got it kiddo."

---------------------

The door to the teahouse opened again and a young man entered. He was dressed in a navy coat that seemed to cover up a lot of him, apart from his head and hair. Long blonde hair tied back in a braid ponytail was the main feature about him if anyone was to look at him, but beyond that under the coat he seemed rather nondescript.

"Seating for one please. One serving of matcha tea."

"Ah yes, please take any seat you like. And what about you two? The usual for you, Akechi-san? Or Something else? And a friend of yours?"

Posted Image
"The usual Orange Pekoe please. And no, just someone new to town, so I thought to be helpful."

"Alright. And you sir?" the shopkeeper asked, handing over the list of the day's specials.

So, we were being followed. Hibiki thought, keeping up her cheerful expression as she took her seat. How rude.

She'd just used what was perhaps one of the oldest tricks in the book: A random walk.

Moving about completely at random, the odds someone else would take the same route to get anywhere were sufficiently slim that seeing someone more than once on an entirely random route was notable.

As the number of changes in route increased, the more notable every such contact became. At some point, it was fairly obvious when someone was following you when you'd cut through some of the most inefficient paths to get anywhere and they still appeared in proximity.

Such a sloppy tail.

This was why following someone, when done by police or other government agencies, generally required large teams of a dozen or more individuals, taking turns covering the subject so as to not attract notice. This meant a small group. One, perhaps two. Certainly not more than four, else it'd have been harder to notice.

More importantly though, Hibiki was also someone who felt most at home in the dark. Despite the nature of her work, the girl had ironically, gotten very good at not being noticed. Conversely, she was also familiar with their use by others.

How bothersome.

She pulled out her phone, and started up some app or other as she got comfortable.

"Just pick anything you'd like." the idol said, seemingly glued to the screen as she tapped away at some messenger program. "My treat today. Seriho-san has a wonderful selection."

Nickle smiled, "Well I'll try the same, first time here and all, I'll follow your lead." said Nickle with a thumbs up to Hibiki. As they took their seats, Nickle spotted the young man who entered a few minutes after them. Nickle watched as Hibiki started tapping at her phone and offering to pay, however he playfully shoved her shoulder, "Don't even think about it Miss Famous. You're still at kid. It would look bad if I let you treat me, no matter who you are."

The young blonde man had taken a seat at the far end of the counter and had put Nickle between himself and Hibiki. He waited patiently, apparently also taking out a smartphone and tapping away at it. Had either of them been paying attention, he'd also seemingly set his wallet down on the counter and was preparing to counter some coins.

Now Hibiki had been smart to notice they were being tailed, but there was something she had not noticed. Nickle may act like a clown sometimes, but that did not mean he had his own powers of observation. Spotting someone following you was one thing, but being aware that a considerable amount of static electricity was following you was another matter entirely.

Nickle could sense it now, a huge electromancer presence. It had been following himself and Hibiki and thus he'd made good not to bring it up in case Hibiki panicked. It was close now and the kid that was sitting in the cafe' reaked of that electrical aura, but...it didn't seem to be coming from him. It was still right on top of them.

Nickle glanced outside through the window only to be met with a horrific flash of light.

---------------------

The larger of the two men had been casually leaning up against a wall, letting people who were passing by act as his cover. While not many, he had no reason to hide. He watched his partner enter the teahouse and started counting in his head. He knew his partner would be as well. After waiting for five minutes, he stood up and rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck. He then unhooked some straps and opened up his white coat, pulling out a sword from a sheath he'd some how managed to conceal.

All the while, he was exerting his electrical prescience. Not in large bombastic arcs of lightning or discharges, but by sending out electrons in all directions. They made cause some electronics to stutter, but really it was just for Nickle to focus on him.

Posted Image

He stepped out into the middle of the street and turned to look at the building wall behind him, opposite that of the teahouse. People were now either stopping or cautiously looking at the sword as the walked past. Was it real or cosplay? The man raised the sword and pointed it straight up, pausing for a moment.

He extended his free hand and a large square of purple energy, slightly higher and wider than himself before to form to the side of him. He left it stand there turned to face the buildings opposite the teahouse again.

And then swung the sword.

It did not strike anything or anyone, but a sudden large flash and burst of lightning exploded out from the blade and a huge arc of lightning went blasting into the opposite wall, sending out a shockwave and back-blast of air as it impacted.

---------------------

"GET DOWN!" Nickle shouted as he jumped up from his seat, his hand shooting forward and creating a blue barrier out in front of the cafe' to protect those inside from the aftershock of the blast. The barrier barely reached the entrance before the glass from the window exploded and slammed against it.

The next series of events happened almost simultaneously and with a certain smoothness that showed professionals at work. The young man had stood up at the same time as Nickle had, but did not move to defend anyone. Inside, he threw something small and silver, easily mistaken for a coin, towards the space behind the counter where Nickle and Hibiki were sitting, before pulling off his outer coat and drawing a firearm and pointing it toward Nickle's back.

Posted Image

"Time's up. Removing arc suppressor gear." were the only words that left his mount before firing a round towards Nickle's back. As soon as the gunshot went off, Nickle turned and tried to stop it, only for the bullet to hit him in the upper left shoulder. Only instead of piercing, it stuck there. He looked down to see an odd black circle affixing itself to his arm, the pain was immense!

At the same time the shot was fired a purple square of energy appeared in the cafe from where the coin was thrown to and was now sticking to the wall. A scene of outside, only from another angle appeared and man in white reached out quickly to grab a hold of Hibiki and pull her through the portal, "Yo baby, this way."

Nickle caught this out of the corner of his eyes too late, throwing up another barrier to deflect the next shot from the gunman. The only thing he could do was scream out a warning. "Hibiki!"
