"The Dreatheth hour come at last," an excitable girl's voice spoke in a faux-morose tone, "The Occultic ball of mystery will finally engrave its darkness upon us four beleaguered souls. Past lives will be re-lived. Futures will be seeded. My sealed arm is tingling with anticipation for it!"

The girl's badge-tied arm actually looked rather limp, probably from poor circulation, as her other held a reddish rubberized ball aloft with the backdrop of the school's gymnasium and planted trees around the asphault arena.

Given that this was Senki, conversations like this one weren't so out of the norm that she attracted overmuch attention, but she did earn a couple "What, really?" glances from nearby as she pumped the ball.

The on-loan Kaneshima gym teacher thankfully prevented her next utterance in order to order a handshake between players. The girl smiled knowingly, aware of what chaos would come next as she looked over to the boy she'd yet to acknowledge today.

But how had this all started? A simple matter of a cross-year field trip being canceled due to a bus not making it on time. Something about hitting a kid that jumped in the way to save another one, and trying to figure out just what medieval fantasy they'd ended up in, of course. And so, fearing what the students would do with an unstructured free period instead of a trip, dodgeball was mandated.

This 3-on-3 group was probably going to make them regret it.

Once again, Eri had found herself on the business end of a playing field, someplace she really had no business being. But as her father always said, better to light a candle than curse the darkness! So once more she'd get down to business, just as she had on that volleyball court the other day.

...

Well, ok probably not exactly like that, she'd gotten bloodied pretty badly that day, but either way she was prepared to give them the business! The only reason she was here because she was the only one who didn't speak up when volunteers were asked her, not that there was anything she could do about that...

Eri tightened her ponytail and sighed, adjusting her gym shorts as well. Muttering a silent prayer to herself she offered her hand for the friendly pre-game handshake, at the same time lighting that fire of determination she kept stoked at all time just in case of situations like this. They might make fun of her for being weak and clumsy, but she'd never be accused of not trying.
Alright, if she lost this match but did her very best to the end she'd reward herself with tuna curry!

However, if she won...

It would be beef and potatoes!

Eri's eyes flashed as they shook hands, and anyone looking at her (without knowing anything about her ability) might've mistaken her for a serious competitor.

I'll aim for the curry! she thought, tempering her expectations appropriately.

Standing beside that grinning, exciteable girl was a brown-haired boy whose expression seemed somehow pained. An expression that reflected the exasperation, embarrassment and resignation he felt towards her, muttering about some incomprehensible delusions as usual. In a place like this, such things weren't exactly uncommon - in fact, they often had some real evidence to back them up, something that never failed to surprise Karada. But that only serves to tire him further, because it meant that there was no-one to actually call Kokoro out on her childishness. No-one but him, anyway.

"Stop trying to scare the other team, Kokoro." He sighed, ignoring her gaze and instead turning to the dark-haired girl stood alongside the pair.
"Sorry she dragged you into this. She said that only you look cool and shadowy enough to be on her team." The girl, who'd been quietly sitting by the side, had been pulled onto Kokoro's team without even a chance for protest. Fortunately she didn't seem that reluctant, else Karada would have tried (and failed) to free her.

"I'm Karada, by the way. The other one is Kokoro." He gestured dismissively to the girl beside him, before lining up to shake hands with the other team. Once declarations of war had been announced by Kokoro, the two teams split up to stand at their respective ends of the court, the balls placed in the centre.

"Start!"

The team lead turned back to her noisy compatriot, trying to clarify his misleading of their kouhai. For her part, Kokoro wasn't too sure what the girl's name was, but was sure it'd come to her.

"Come, now, Brother of the Crawling Madness," she interrupted tersely while making a pentagram in the air with her sealed arm, "You could at least use today's titles. We will need them to command the darkness and save our opponent's souls from the vortex below. That, and they just give people the right impression."

The match begins and Kokoro rushes for the ball, almost immediately cramping halfway to it and clutching her side while also holding her head and posing strangely.

"Mu-hu-hurgh-hu-hu, it seems my dark soul is already trying to spill fuuurgh-forth, and thus my allies have been bolstered by the demonic fuuurgh-force..." She claims loudly while wincing in pain and hoping to hide it.

Eri waved her hands and shook her head frantically in apology. She didn't mind being picked at all, really! Once they actually watched her play it might actually make more sense for her to be the one apologizing...

Being silent made a lot of people think she was kind of weird and gloomy, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Hopefully they wouldn't be too disappointed once they realized she was actually fairly ordinary compared to what they were thinking. And even more so than the strange (stranger?) girl who seemed to be their... leader? Captain? She was certainly acting like it, anyhow. To Eri at least, that meant she must be pretty good, so even if she could only do a little, there was one person she could rely on!

She swallowed a lump of nervous energy in her throat, not letting the tension of lining up for a big rush to the center make her too skittish. So she just had to make it to the center before the other team, right? The call went out and the three of them charged, Eri letting out a silent cry as she pushed her thin, scrawny legs as hard as she could, eyes transfixed on the ball ahead of her.

Even so, she could see already that it was of little use, her legs were too slow to match her doppelganger across the line. Eri let her keen gaze wander in the direction of their leader, at least she was probably faring much better than--

The pale girl nearly tumbled to the gym floor herself with an expression of disappointed shock on her face, witnessing the unusual girl already doubled over just barely across the starting line. C-Captain! She hadn't expected very much and she was still somehow disappointed! Well, maybe Eri could still help out some other way. Breaking from her mad dash to the center line she shot towards Kokoro, coming to a sliding halt in front of her. This was dodgeball, right? Even if she didn't have a ball, she could still catch one!

Eri chanced a glance behind her at Kokoro, flashing her a comforting smile. She might not be the best at catching, but she'd do her best and if nothing else make a fairly useful shield. Her eyes shot back forward with a look of utter determination, the fire of the holy spirit bolstering her own! Let a thousand balls fly her way, she'd catch every one of them! Eri's spirit soared in that moment, ready for any onslaught!

She also made a mental note to pick up tuna on the way home.

"Please don't call me that..." Karada groaned, trying not to watch the girl's meaningless hand movements before the start. "They give people the wrong impression!"

And it gave Kokoro the wrong start, as evidenced by her near-instant tumble down to the ground. She hadn't even been hit yet! While their black-haired teammate rushed over to help Kokoro, Karada had gotten completely caught up in the rush of setting off. He'd sped past the two girls, beating even the other team to the ball and thus securing one for himself!

Unfortunately, he was only one, while the other team had grabbed two. He backed off quickly, glancing towards Kokoro and his black-haired ally to see how they were doing. Not too well, as it turned out. "Look, just... dodge, and we'll be fine! They only have two balls it's not that- Nnghuugh?!"

Just as he was saying so, both balls from the other team came hurtling towards him, catching him off-guard straight in each shoulder. Off-balance, he quickly tumbled backwards... into the two girls on his team!

Kokoro realized that she wasn't actually cramping- it was just those silly voodoo needles she'd left on the inside of her shirt. She sighed with a bit of relief as she thought of her next proclamation of greatness- that was, of course, until a certain familiar someone she wasn't listening to in the slightest decided to be a bit of an oaf and bowl her and the mysterious girl over.

They went down in a swirl of occult paraphenelia, curses and mixing thoughts as they collapsed to the tarmac in a heap, hands and legs in a formation somewhat resembling the celtic knot.

A certain Maiden of Screaming Darkened Twilight was the first to untangle herself, spitting out hair as she stood with a wobble- there was a more leg to stand up with than she was used to. She nodded, realizing what had happened- The fates of her and The Brother of Crawling Madness were intertwined once more, their consciousnesses splitting within the-

Wait, something wasn't right. No announcement of the sealed spirit inside of her was coming out. The people needed her dark sermon, and they would not receive the voice of shadowy flame. She checked down- the familiar athletic structure of the body wasn't there, leaving only one explanation- Koukan was actually a muted girl!

Oh, wait, two explanations- she was in Eri's body. Then who had the netherswap put in her body? Looking intently, she saw a familiar frumpy frown on her own lips. That means...

Eri flinched as she was, for the second time in as many days, crashed into while playing sports. If it were football or soccer she might have expected this, but volleyball and dodgeball? Surely God was testing her somehow. Maybe sports just wasn't in his plan for her... yeah, she could buy that...

Although...

Rather than the usual throbbing of her spindly muscles and aching of her skull, Eri felt strangely... strong. Pulling herself to get feet, she rubbed her head, only barely registering the sudden shortening of her hair. Despite the strange sudden muscles she felt lifting her from the ground, her vision was actually quite blurry. Was this a concussion?!

"Oh no!" Eri suddenly cried in a masculine voice, a pair of lenses that had been resting on the end of her nose suddenly bouncing into view as she flinched. With an audible gasp, she threw her hands over her mouth, now fully aware of just how big her fingers were compared to the pale, delicate digits she was used to. This wasn't right.

No, it was in fact very very wrong. Cautiously, she removed the foreign hands away from her mouth.

"Aaaahhhh... Lalala. Booooo. Leedleeedlee, oh my goodness!" A rush overtook her senses, a swelling in her broad chest as the sensation of sound filled her throat for the first time in her life. If she weren't also quite afraid, she might cry from happiness. Of course by now she had noticed herself standing just feet away, looking as confused as she felt and the wheels began to turn.

Perhaps amplified by the awkward way she was forced to stand due to a new appendage she certainly was not used to bearing.

"What... what's happening?!" Eri cried, both thrilled by the sound and horrified by the circumstances.

Groaning, Karada slowly pulled himself up from the pile of students, his head throbbing and his body aching as though he'd run several laps around the school. "Agh... Kokoro, that's what you get for... eh?" He blinked, briefly confused by the girlish voice to have left his mouth. A very familiar, very irritating voice, speaking the words he intended to say. He was quick to suspect what had happened, and it only took raising a hand to brush through that long, brown hair to confirm it. She was in the unathletic, armband-clad body of Kokoro!

With a sigh, she turned her gaze to the other two who had been caught in the tumble - the dark-haired girl, and a boy resembling her perfectly. Probably because it was her - her body, anyway. "Dammit, did we have to swap now? I don't want to be in your unfit body for gym!" She crossed her arms, straightening out her sportwear a little and pulling the armbands off, which she proceeded to stuff into her pocket.

"Kokoro" wasn't really paying much attention to that dark-haired girl, and her attention was primarily focused on "Karada". Who was acting rather strangely, even considering who (she thought) was inside. "What? You don't have to pretend this is strange, Kokoro. You're not fooling anyone." Indeed, as far as Karada was concerned, her body was acting like that because... well, because acting strange was the norm for Kokoro. "Come on, we need to apologise to her." She turned to their black-haired teammate, who she assumed was simply shocked from the fall. "Are you alright? Sorry for constantly spouting gibberish and making a mess."
