James frowned slightly. They were misinterpreting what he had proposed. "I did not mean to join the groups together. I for one, have no interest in Kendo competitions. But if we can watch them a bit latter, we can see how things are for those who are interested in that."

Getting an idea he asked "What will happen when one of you graduates? Will you have to get a new member who needs to be trained from scratch, or will your group just shrink until it fails to have the required number of members?" Smiling slightly "Or, if you just let us train, you may try to recruit one of our members when you need a new member for your team. That way your team can keep competing, and those of us interested in such events can learn from a team who is experianced and focused on winning them."

Giving them a little time to think about it "Either let us train, or your team will be destroyed by your own actions and the reputation it has built up will be gone. It does you no harm to leave us alone, but will probably cost you your very teams existance if you stop us."

"Well yeah, my background was more in kenjutsu rather than kendo," Nicole remarked as Ayane saw right through her - clearly noticing that the onyx-haired girl already had a foundation in swordplay. "Back home my family ran a dojo and we're trained in a combination of kenjutsu and taijutsu," the lightning warrior explained, nodding as Rodrigues-sensei explained the various cuts in kendo to the class... up until they were interrupted.

Nicole couldn't help but sigh as the students who introduced themselves as Kaneshima High's kendo club - marched in with an ultimatum that Senki Academy's kendo club vacate the premises because it's time for their practice. On one hand, part of Nicole wanted to call out the group for being such douchebags, yet on the other hand the lightning warrior held her tongue for the last thing she wanted was more friction between the two schools' student bodies, as the previous incident involving the Kaneshima Delinquents remained fresh on her mind.

Yes, the construction of Senki Academy was to blame for part of the land on old high school sits being acquired by the JCP for development, but now Kaneshima High School has gotten a new lease on life thanks to it being incorporated into the Senki Academy campus. Still, it seemed that some old animosities die hard.

"James! That's no way to talk to one's seniors!" Nicole chided James as he spoke his piece - even if their attitude left much to be desired, the fact remains that the members of Kaneshima High's kendo club has been at it longer than them, and as such hold higher ranks in kendo. And as far as the martial artist was concerned, rank and seniority is something to be respected - similar to something she'd heard being said in the military afterall; salute the rank, not the person wearing it.

"Where I came from, I was raised on the belief that seniors ought to set a positive example for their juniors to follow," Nicole added after Yukina confirmed with Rodrigues-sensei that she'd indeed booked the training hall on this very date, at this time slot, for their class. "That is to say, shouldn't you be holding yourself to higher standards than your juniors? And as Shiromizu-san had said, she's already booked this hall, then should't you set a good example for your juniors by honouring the bookings?" Nicole asked, trying to reason with the Kaneshima High students.

Tashiro was rather tempted to challenge one of the members of the apparently rival kendo group to a duel, but...

It wasn't worth it. Sensei made the right move by pushing the blame onto these intruders, though the other students speaking up were doing nothing but ruin that momentum. He could almost cry. It was so close to being a proper showing of mental maneuvering to cow their new schoolmates. Instead their already formed kendo team got to see his new club mates bicker about how to deal with them.

Instead of speaking, Tashiro simply drew himself up to his full (not so great) height, and squared his feet, giving a blank stare towards the Kaneshima team member Sou, that loud mouthed rude one who so plainly wanted to start a fight. Not that Tashiro was itching for one, but it had been some time since he got to really let loose on someone.

"Do not patronise me!" Edie's voice thundered at the deliberate misconstruing of her words. She drew in closer to the rival club members and stood her ground. "Just because I want us to sort this out diplomatically does not give you the right to sneer at me like I'm an insignificant speck." Their lack of proper respect and diregard of decorum frustrated her, and her lashing out was what happened if it got to the point of really getting under her skin like this.

She calmed down and looked at Nicole, and sighed. Her outburst had also gone against the standards she had set for herself, and she was well aware of it. She just couldn't keep it bottled up like that. She then turned to Tashiro, whose gaze seemed to indicate that he seemed to be ready to go a few rounds against the brash one. She shook her head. This wasn't how they were going to solve it.

She drew herself up. "Look, I'm sure that there's a mistake or misunderstanding here, but I trust Shiromizu-sama's word, as I do Rodrigues-sensei's. I understand that this should be your normal weekly practice time, and I can respect that. We share the roof and floor of the dojo together, and that is surely something to be thankful for. But, attempting to overturn the advance scheduling of this first practice is sheer chutzpah that is never welcome. Either we share the space, or not at all. There's nothing else to it, and there shouldn't be either. Sensei has laid out his terms." Though her admonishment of them was admittedly somewhat out of place for a junior of her stature, it only felt appropriate to be assertive but reasonable in the same way that Nicole was. With luck it would convince them to try to find a compromise.

The blond girl looked Chairo up and down as he addressed her, the look of disdain never once leaving her face. "I don't think a child needs to worry about my love life," she said. "But thank you for your concern. As for you..."

Her eyes moved across the group of students, landing on James. "We might be sharing the same grounds, but our schools are still separate institutions. We have many new members among our first years, including Horie-san, who is present." She nodded at the silver-haired girl, who was watching the proceedings. "Given our reputation, I doubt we'll fail to continue recruiting members from the student body of Kaneshima High School. And even if we could, we would have no need to recruit anyone from Senki."

The way she said the word suggested that she harbored some ill-will towards the academy, but she didn't elaborate. "Regardless, I hardly think it would cost us our existence to stop you. There's no need to be so melodramatic."

Meanwhile, Souma's eyes widened at Edie's outburst, a look of shock crossing over his expression as her words echoed in the dojo. "Wow," he said. "There's no need to get so testy. I was only agreeing with you."

He turned towards Chairo as the boy approached, blinking at him. "Well, Senki Academy certainly likes to recruit its students young, doesn't it?" he asked. "And did you really say your name was 'brown leaf'?" He smiled. "I suppose it isn't my place to comment on it. My name is Agano Souma. I've been doing kendo since my first year of middle school." He looked past Chairo, offering a seething Ayane a smile. "Katagiri and I were in the same kendo club in middle school actually. It's nice to see her picking it up again."

As Tashiro drew himself up to his full height, he would find himself met with a steady, dark-eyed stare. The black-haired boy from the Kaneshima High School students was watching him closely. While neither of them had spoken, the air between them was charged, and the implication was clear. If Tashiro wanted to issue a challenge, the boy would be more than happy to accept it.

He started to take a step forward, but was stopped by a hand on his arm, coming from the captain. Keiji said nothing, only shook his head, but the black-haired boy relented, keeping his eyes on Tashiro from a distance.

It seemed like the situation was drawing to a head. As the blond girl and Souma spoke with the Senki Academy students, the other girl, the silver-haired first year that the blond had identified as Horie, turned towards the captain with an uncertain look on her face.

"What should we do, Captain?" she asked.

Keiji didn't immediately answer, his eyes moving from Yukina, who shrank back under his gaze, to Ayane, who glared at him, to Edie and Nicole. His gaze lingered especially long on Nicole and Yukina. After a long, tense moment, he inclined his head in acknowledgement, nodding at Nicole and Edie, who had spoken.

"Alright," he said. "Since this is Senki Academy's dojo, I'm willing to concede the point. We scheduled our practice through our own institution, so we could have made a mistake. We can work out a schedule moving forward so this doesn't happen again. Does that work for everyone here?"

He looked around at the students, waiting for a response.

Again, names are surname first. We'll probably go another round or two before closing out this thread. If you want to call out individual members of Kaneshima High's kendo team, and maybe get some rivalries going, this is your time!

He was clearly amused that she was still underestimating him greatly. If things kept heading that way, she might end up going easy on him if they ever cross swords. But he then focused on Souma, who was reacting to Edie briefly. "I'm actually just a young genius. That and, well, I was born in Kaneshima, so this is like coming back home. But yes, my name is Brown Leaf. I don't have a family name.", Chairo replied, allowing Souma's eyes to stray.

While a decision, had to be made, the kid was thinking "Maybe I should ask him if he wants to spar with me tomorrow. Or in the weekend! Yes, weekend would be great!", and when their captain drew to a conclusion, Chairo nodded in agreement, but before that...

"So, Sou-san, I was thinking if you wanted to spar with me at Mount Kaneshima. It's okay if you say you can't, but... I think we could have a good friendly-rivalry!", that wasn't the only idea now, was it, Chairo?

When James was told the group had more members, he nodded slightly. "A misunderstanding. You are just the team, and not the whole club. That changes things, and I applogise for jumping to an erronious conclusion."

When Chairo offered a friendly rivalry, James nodded. ". . . . Actually, that's a pretty good idea. When you train with someone often, your styles get too much alike, and you get into a rut. Different groups would allow for both sides to train on their own, and face each other in small matches. We may not be up to your standards now, but maybe with training, and experiance, we could match your new members."

Friendly rivalry? Really? Edie was sure that these two were overreaching at this point. It was like they were asking to get beat down by an opponent that would almost certainly dominate them in a remotely fair competition. Nobody ever started a rivalry with a far superior foe like this without getting stomped on. She cleared her throat and flatly said to the two, "I think you two are going a bit far with this. Do you even know anything else besides the stances we were just taught?" She shook her head in amazement at their chutzpah.

In any case, she turned to the opposite group. "I know that the circumstance must have been difficult for you to accommodate, but I would like to thank you for your respect and understanding." It only seemed fair that if they were willing to respect the booking and accommodate for them, that she uphold their grouping to the same started. She also turned to Sou and gave a bow. "And I should apologise as well for my outburst, it was inappropriate to do so under the roof. I'm sure we will enjoy sharing the space with each other not just as rivals and competitors but also as friends with a mutual appreciation of as fine a martial art as this."

Souma snorted softly at Chairo's request, although the smile had never faded from his face. His eyes drifted to Edie as she spoke up. "You should listen to your classmate, Leaf-san. I think you need to know a little more than stances before we can spar. Besides," His smile widened. "We're busy training for the prefectural tournament, so I doubt I'll have the time. Unfortunately."

The inflection on the last word suggested that Souma found nothing 'unfortunate' about it. But he nodded at Edie anyway, returning her bow. Although his form and response was perfectly correct, and perfectly polite as far as etiquette went, there was a hint of something that would make it just a touch infuriating. It was as if everything Souma did carried a hidden undercurrent of mockery.

"No apologies needed," he said. "Maybe we'll even meet in competition someday. Assuming I don't graduate before then. Are we leaving now, Captain?" he asked, looking back at Keiji.

"You're infuriating as always, Souma," the blond girl said, barely sparing James a nod as he apologized for his mistake. The last thing he said, about their club eventually meeting the standards of hers, went completely ignored, as though she was making an effort not to hear it. She turned away from him, brows arching as she too, watched the captain.

"Yes," Keiji said, "We're leaving. Pardon the interruption again, sensei." He nodded at Rafael, about to go, when his eyes landed on Yukina. "Shiromizu, was it?"

Yukina jumped. "Y-Yes?"

"We should set up a time to meet. I want to make sure we don't have any more scheduling conflicts. Does that sound good to you?"

Yukina hesitated, clearly intimidated by the idea, but she nodded. "Yes," she said. "Th-That sounds good to me...Fujita-san."

"I'll be in touch," said Fujita, with a nod. He gestured for his team to leave, the five of them turning away and exiting the dojo. One of them, the dark-haired boy, paused to stare at Tashiro a little longer before he turned, following them out.

Rafael waited until their footsteps had faded away and the doors to the dojo had closed again before sighing, shaking his head. "Well," he said. "Looks like we're getting into some kind of trouble. Anyway, let's get back to class. We'll practice those stances until you feel comfortable with them, and then, if we get there today, we'll work on cuts. At the end of class, don't run away. Shiromizu and Katagiri will be taking down your names if you still want to join up after all this. And the next time we meet for practice, you should be dressed in your kendo club uniforms."

Notes and Announcements

And that's it! Thank you all very much for joining me in the first inaugural run of the kendo club. In the future, threads involving the Kaneshima High School kendo team will be smaller and will move at the pace of the people involved, whereas lesson threads will be separate, open to anyone in the kendo club, and will move sort of like this. From here on out, kendo club topics will be closed to members of the kendo club.

To join, see here. There are more notes there, so kendo club members, please take a look!

IC Notes: If you're keeping track, your characters learned the five basic stances and the four basic cuts today.
