Instinct took over where conscious reaction would have failed. Again, Ashley's speed was surprising, and Neves realized, now having got something of the measure of the capoeirista and an idea of the style, Ashley was speeding up her attacks. She'd have to be careful. Capoeira was a fighting style, but there was a reason that was called a 'game' as well.

Neves dropped into a very low squat, with her hands forming an 'x' over her head. Technically, a cocorinha it was used primarily to dodge medium to high kicks from another capoeirista, but it worked just as well in avoiding jabs. But it had one nice advantage, especially for those who thought Capoeira was all about kicks.

From the position, she launched up from the squat, taking advantage of her position to boost her motion. Neves' elbow led the way, returning the shot toward Ashley's chin, in a variation on what was called a cotovelada. Normally, it went from the outside in, but in a pinch, it was just as potentially effective from below to above.

Ashley got ahead of herself; in her aggressive advance, she thought less to watch Neves and more about landing a clean hit. So when she squatted and launched herself upward, Ashley was caught slightly unaware!

She barely had time to lean back, the incoming elbow delivering a glancing blow to her chin. Still, a hit to the chin was powerful and Type:Lancer did not boast the augmented endurance of Ashley's other manifestations. She saw some black lights begin to dance around the edges of her vision but fortunately, her instinct allowed for an immediate reaction.

Her right hand was balled into a fist and was brought back to her side when trying to avoid the elbow and after she took the hit, it was quickly thrust forward much like a spear to her opponent's midsection at high speed.

Neves realized as she had launched upward with her elbow strike that there was a likely to be a price paid for the action. It left her vulnerable to a counterstrike, though she had been hoping for a more solid hit, enough to stagger Ashley to allow Neves to get in a better position.

Instead, she received a fast punch straight into her solar plexus. She released an explosive whuff as the wind was knocked out of her. Thankfully, it was a fast but not devastatingly strong punch. Still, it hurt and she'd have a some lovely bruising in the area.

She instinctively tucked into the punch, even as it sent her flying backward. It kept the worst of it from doing any more injury than it had, and expanded the distance between them. She got her feet down quickly, skidding on the balls of her feet. Wincing as she came to a stop, she went into the ginga. It wasn't immediately as fast as it had been, but it gave her some rhythm back to her step and helped focus her mind.

The strains of the previous song faded just she got her ginga going. Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, with its strong guitar intro, blared into life.

Rising up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

"That round's to you," Neves said with a grin. "Now, it's my turn."

She quickly slipped into a series of low leg sweeps, alternating the legs and directions of the sweeps, attempting to force Ashley back or risk having her legs taken out from under her again.

Solid hit! Alright!

Though I may have hit a bit too hard with that last one she thought to herself, in the middle of striking a self-satisfied victory pose.

The music changed, but that wasn't the only thing. She could see the look in her opponent's eyes; firey with determination.

"Your turn?" she grinned, taking a four-point sprinter's stance "is this the part in the manga where you power up and beat me?"

It was all in jest but Ashley started feeling that she should stay vigilant to avoid any mishaps like before, especially against this warmed-up Neves.

The low sweeps came like a furious tornado, threatening to cut her up and knock her down if she stayed static. But static was not a state in which Lancer tended to live in. She kicked off the ground into a handstand and then pushed her arms up, sending her in an very arched backflip over Neves, just high enough to grab the sash at the tip of her spear.

The weapon had impaled the ceiling with such force that it stayed lodged in there even as Ashley grabbed the sash and used it to swing around at Neves, feet first.

This is what happens if you watch too much George of the Jungle as a kid.
