"Good. I trust you to. I might not be a strict doctrinaire, but I'll be damned if I don't stay true to my word and teachings. In any case though, I hope that all that I mentioned was useful. There's more to get into, but I think what I described covers it. I think that it'll let you realise the naginata's strengths and weaknesses as we start getting into different material."

She got up. "Talking about which, I want us to try something. I want us to spar using furiage alone, with you on the attack and me on the defense. It shouldn't be anything serious, I just want you to use what you know in an actual combat situation. Finding your way with striking and blocking as you can, and getting to feel the strike against a proper opponent rather than just air. Sound alright to you?" She picked her naginata up from the floor. "It will feel different at first, but don't worry too much. I'll talk and show you through it."

"Spoken like a true teacher." Jia-ying said with a smile.

When Edie suggested they spar, Jia-ying nodded and said, "Sounds good to me." They took positions opposite each other.

Keeping the lesson in mind, Jia-ying focused on her positioning, gripping the stick properly as Edie made the calls.

And then, just like before , she felt that strange ripple go through her.
What's happening?! She thought in panic; her grip on the stick tightening.

And then suddenly, she was watching from a foggy distance as she called out in a strong, commanding tone, "Mae!" her body moved sharply as she brought the stick crashing down on Edie with precision and power.

Perhaps in a real combat situation, this would be the move where the striker would try to physically overpower the opponent to win the fight. How would Edie respond?

"UKE!"

Despite the strength of the blow, Edie made a swift move to block. Taking a step back, she instinctively raised her naginata to a right angle. With Jia-ying's strike coming down as an overhead furigae strike targeting the head, the most simple move was to counter by holding the naginata over her head to block the blade from reaching her. It was the most basic defensive move for her to use, and she could tell that this might be what she would teach Jia-ying next.

"Yow!" The strength of the strike, though, definitely was more than enough to surprise her and feel the shock of the wood knocking into each other. It wouldn't last more than a moment though, and as she recovered and stepped back into chudan she did her appraisal of that strike.

"Well, you brought the naginata down at the right time as things went, and you hit the sweet sport of the forward furigae - I saw it go straight down vertically. I was planning to make a defensive move all along to block it, but well, I didn't really expect that!" She chuckled a bit. Perhaps the fact she had skipped the meditation meant that there was still quite a bit of pent-up energy that couldn't be released too slowly.

"In any case, I'll get you to try defensive moves in time, but I want you to keep trying that furigae strike. I'll use the same blocking technique of uke to hold it off, but just try to replicate that last strike, only with just a little less power." She steadied herself for the next barrage.

"Hajime!" That would be Jia-ying's cue to start again.

They practiced back and forth for an hour or so, Edie would notice that the ferocity in Jia-ying's earlier strike was lacking, though the girl tried her best to follow Edie's instructions carefully, making her attacks a lot more disciplined though much weaker in comparison.

An hour later, Edie called it a day and the two sat down on the floor to rest.
Jia-ying took out her water bottle and took a sip of her water, quietly contemplating on the training. Two times that weird sensation had happened. What the heck was it?
She was a little freaked out by it, but she couldn't tell Edie; mostly because she couldn't figure out what had even happened and trying to put in words her jumbled thoughts seemed too hard at the moment.

Pushing her troubled thoughts aside, she turned to her friend, "Thanks for teaching me Edie. I really appreciate it." Jia-ying said with a genuine smile.
At least in all this mess, Edie was there. A comforting presence as always.
In all their times as friends, without even realizing it Jia-ying had come to see Edie as a pillar of strength. Some one she could always depend on.

She put her water bottle back in her bag and got up to help Edie pack up then went to change.
Stepping out the dojo, the girl looked up at the late afternoon sun and inhaled the fresh air deeply. Whatever had happened, right now she didnt want to worry about it. "Let's get some icecream." she said to Edie with a grin, "My treat."
