Profile - General Template V1.00
Name: Matsumoto Takeshi (Kanji: 松本 武) Gender: Manly Man Age: 34
Height: 186 cm Weight: 98 kg (with only 9% body fat)
Appearance: At a first glance, everything about his appearance screams "Action Genre Hero Guy" - depending on which time of the month, he's sporting anywhere between a grade 0 to grade 4 buzz cut - and no matter how diligently he shaves, there's always noticeable perma-stubble on his face, notably around the sideburns and mustache.
Despite being a veteran of many battles, his face is miraculously unmarked - though his body bears a few noticeable scars; remnants of old bullet wounds, stab wounds and burns - though not enough to detract from looking reasonably attractive at the beach or poolside; and it shows - his build is that of a classical warrior or pro-athlete; with well-defined musculature around his abs, shoulders, back and legs - powerfully-developed, but not bulky like a bodybuilder.
In terms of dress code, when on SERAPH business he's usually seen in business attire, mostly preferring darker shades such as black, or dark olive, over light-coloured shirts - but unless ordered to do so by a superior he prefers a "professionally unkempt" look with his business attire - eschewing ties and usually with the first couple of buttons left undone.
Is also almost never seen without shades, with a preference for mirrored lenses rather than black - even wears them at night, although for reasons unknown they never seem to impede his vision.
Occupation: (present) SERAPH Agent, (former) Commando, SAF 1st Commandos Battalion Special Operations Force - Rank: 2nd Warrant Officer
Residency: Plato Building
Personality: As a man who got by on instincts and street smarts rather than book smarts or academic qualifications, this was one of the views that Takeshi developed early in life, and would continue to shape his perspective of the world to this day. For one, he is generally not one to be impressed by any paper qualifications or lofty titles - believing in deeds and achievements more strongly than any rank of office or academic qualifications. As anyone in a position of authority can imagine, this makes Takeshi not the easiest person to handle - whether it's getting along with him as a person, or working with him as colleagues.
When faced with individuals whose reputation he feels is "unearned", Takeshi is often noted to be taciturn and sarcastic, using as few words as possible to express his agreement or (more often than not) disagreement, often being quick to make verbal put-downs (although he's also just as quick to make self-deprecating jokes about himself) when dealing with coworkers, and making sassy quips when facing his superiors.
In short, Takeshi basically projects the aura of an archetypal 80's action hero - the gruff and manly type, with a stoic facade that rarely betrays any emotion (save for displays of anger), the tendency to make witty one-liners and crack darkly humourous jokes in the face of danger.
On the flip side, Takeshi tends to warm up a bit when he faced with anyone who can back up their qualifications and titles with actual results. While still gruff and sarcastic on his best days, he tends to address people whom he respects with sincerity in his tone. While he may project an anti-authoritarian, anti-establishment image, Takeshi is a firm believer of rationality and reason. And as such, while he can't stand people who suck up to those in positions of power, neither can he stand those who are needlessly rebellious, or try to be "different for the sake of being different".
As a man who greatly values independence and self-reliance, one of Takeshi's greatest weaknesses is to be indebted to someone, which was what made him adopt a lone wolf stance in life - he didn't need anyone, and he certainly didn't want anyone to need him. He may not care much about laws and regulations, but he is driven by a strong personal sense of ethos, which sometimes brings him in conflict with his superiors and coworkers - when having to decide between the best interests of the mission, or his own morality.
If asked why he isn't a nice guy, he'd quite bluntly reply, "That's because the world isn't a nice place." Although certainly, he'd like to believe he's doing his part in not making it any worse than it already is. He may have made a series of bad decisions in life that led him to where he currently is, but he isn't about to stand by and watch others make the same mistakes if he could help it.
History:
(Early Life) In spite of his name and heritage, Takeshi wasn't born and raised in Japan - but instead was born - and spent much of his life there for that matter - in Singapore. To understand his story, one would need to go back to where it all began, back in the early 1980's. Takeshi's mother was similar - a descendant of Japanese migrants who lived in Singapore, and at the time was a promising student at the National University of Singapore in the medical faculty. A bright student and hard worker but at the same time a social butterfly and avid party-goer, she exemplified the 'work hard, play hard' attitude; and it was little wonder, that she had a wide circle of friends.
Among them however, was one that was a good deal closer to her than the others - a foreign exchange student from America who proved to be her equal in academics. Until one night, an event involving a night of partying and hard drinking leading to a one-night stand that changed it all. When it was discovered that she'd been impregnated, the American student - being from a well-to-do family - was quick to drop out and fly home to the United States and cut off all contact, leaving behind a young mother and unborn child.
In spite of the disapprovals from her main family back in Japan, she'd insisted on keeping the child, and so in the autumn of 1982, Takeshi was born. Although things would never be the same for the young woman who's his mother - the vicious rumours that followed had all but tarnished her reputation and destroyed her future prospects, forcing her to make the ends meet as a cashier at Yaohan. (at least until the retail chain ceased its operations in Singapore in 1997)
His childhood was needless to say, not a particularly happy experience. Having grown up without knowing who his father was, and in addition to being of mixed heritage, Takeshi found himself - from an early age - a victim of constant ostracising and bullying. At best having to put up with stares and whispers from other children in school and at the neighbourhood whenever he walked past, to being subject to name-callings and being pushed and kicked around without provocation. This quickly led to him getting into fights with the other kids at the drop of a hat - although being outnumbered, he'd always get overpowered and beaten up for his troubles.
Naturally, his tendency to get into fights often got him into trouble with school authorities, as well as with his mother - and trips to the principal's office, school counsellors, detentions and even suspensions were part and parcel of his everyday life. Indeed, to see the youngster make it through his primary and secondary school years without needing to repeat any semesters given his disciplinary track record was nothing short of a miracle - not that he cared much for education to begin with - school was to him, seen as an extension of the society that raised him, a society that was built upon shallow conformity, sustained by comforting lies.
Being disillusioned with the concept of formal education, Takeshi would instead take to apprenticeship-based job training, finding himself a job as an auto mechanic's apprentice. Still, the issues that'd haunted him from his school days continued to bug him - his attitude caused him to often get mixed up in the wrong company, and often enough, end up on the wrong side of the law - which saw him hop from job to job, and - before his 18th birthday - in and out of juvenile reform schools.
(National Service and Military Career) Eventually, when Takeshi turned 18, like any able-bodied male Singaporean citizen regardless of ethnicity or religion, he was called up for National Service. Where he would spend two and a half years of conscripted service in one of Singapore's branches of service - the armed forces, police or civil defence. As is the case for the majority of Singaporeans called up for National Service, he would be drafted into the armed forces - although for his case, he was one of the few who'd been handpicked to undergo training with the commando unit - with the qualities that allowed him to be chosen in the first place being his willpower and his determination to "survive against all odds".
While the highly-disciplined life in the military wasn't something that sat well with Takeshi, it was at this point in his life that he would at least (albeit begrudgingly) learn to respect authority that was earned through one's deeds and accomplishments, instead of mere paper qualifications. It was the first time in his life, that he found the ability to fit in - at least to a certain extent. Disciplinary and authority issues were still a problem of his, but otherwise the young man displayed qualities that made him a capable soldier - being able to think and act swiftly and independently, an iron-willed determination to survive at all costs, and swiftness at adapting to changes in situations.
Indeed, if it wasn't for his lack of a higher education and discipline issues, it was reckoned that he would've made it as a commissioned officer - but regardless, at the end of his National Service he opted to sign up as a career soldier, and over the years he would receive many awards for his involvement in wargaming exercises, as well as participation in special training programmes with foreign militaries, such as the US Army Rangers and British Royal Marines - though his rank advancement remains hampered by the above issues.
(Recruitment into SERAPH) While trained to be amongst the elite of the elite, Takeshi had no real encounters with anyone with supernatural abilities or anything extranormal until the incident known as Link Joker occurred - which would prove to be the by now veteran commando's first encounter with the extranormal. When Link Joker's forces staged their invasion, Singapore's defences were thrown into disarray when at least a third of their defenders from the Armed Forces and Police Force were Reversed, culminating in the president being held hostage inside the presidential palace.
Takeshi - at the time a Master Sergeant - would be part of the task force that was assigned with one mission - to infiltrate the presidential palace, neutralise Reversed and Star-Vader forces, and rescue the president. Despite coming under heavy fire from Star-Vaders and Reversed military personnel and his squad leader being wounded in action, Takeshi quickly took command, leading the remaining men to complete their mission where they were able to breach the Star-Vaders' defences and rescue the president, before being extracted by helicopter - and in the aftermath of the Link Joker incident he and his task force were awarded medals for their heroism, while Takeshi himself also received a promotion to the rank of 2nd Warrant Officer.
Not long after, Takeshi would be approached by his unit's commanding officer, who approached him with a new assignment from the Ministry of Defence; that he has been selected by SERAPH (Strategic Espionage, Research, Administration & Protection Headquarters) to become one of their field agents - a position that is only offered to the best of the best - which by the standards of non-powered humans, it would mean only the most elite military or intelligence service personnel would be offered this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
After completing an intense training course that would see one in every three recruit drop out, Takeshi would complete his training as a SERAPH field agent, and as his first assignment he was to be dispatched to the country of his ancestry, Japan, to an island known as Kaneshima...
Powers and Abilities: Takeshi has no known supernatural or superhuman abilities of any sort, instead relying on his extensive military training and equipment. As a veteran special forces soldier, Takeshi has been drilled intensively in military skillls such as firearms and marksmanship, handling of explosives and demolitions, unarmed combat and CQC, wilderness survival and navigation, as well as stealth and espionage/counter-espionage such as sentry elimination, infiltration and sabotage, and resisting interrogation. In addition, being a SERAPH agent he is also issued with state-of-the-art technology, as shown below.
WatchMe (SERAPH variant) A form of cybernetic augmentation consisting of medical nanobots being introduced into the body, WatchMe was originally developed for use by agents for the World Health Organisation's Helix Bureau, and subsequently adopted for use by SERAPH's field agents as well. While not as powerful as other forms of augmentations, the main advantage of WatchMe is that compared to say - cyborg conversions - the process is far less intrusive and traumatising. The main purpose of the nanites is to optimise the human body and improve survivability. To this end, WatchMe provides the following benefits to its recipent:
- Improved Survivability: The medical nanobots actively identify anomalies within the body, and work in conjunction with the body's natural defences to neutralise or purge toxins and destroy pathogens, as well as assisting in cellular regeneration, effectively staving off (if not halting) cell senescence, rendering the recipent immune to mundane diseases and aging, as well as providing an improved healing factor - such as making surgical procedures go along more smoothly, or receiving organ transplants with no fear of rejection.
- Performance Enhancements: While WatchMe is no super soldier serum, the nanobots ability to regulate and control human biological functions also provide it with the additional benefit of being able to optimise the performance of the human body, such as stimulating the secretion of performance-improving hormones, providing more efficient metabolism, and neutralising fatigue toxins, to allow its user to perform at peak-human levels; making them stronger, faster and more alert than the average human being.
- Active Monitoring System: In addition to its benefits, the SERAPH variant of WatchMe is connected to SERAPH's own network known as CHOIR, allowing them to be able to at all times track the location of their assets as well as monitor their condition.
CHOIR Access CHOIR is the name of the tactical network owned by SERAPH, which allows their field agents to have 24/7 contact with the headquarters or the nearest SERAPH outpost for tactical support, typically CHOIR's features can be accessed via an Augmented Reality headset - typically designed along the lines of Google Glass. On the most basic level, the headset is effectively a wearable smartphone, allowing its user to be able to do most things a smartphone can do - make calls, browse the internet, download and run apps, play media files, etc. However, the true power of the CHOIR headset is its ability to access the various features offered by SERAPH's network, such as:
- Status Monitoring: Working in conjunction with the WatchMe nanobots inside the agent's body, CHOIR is capable of displaying readouts of the agent's current physical status, monitoring aspects of their body such as pulse, hormone levels and such, and instantly alerting the agent to the presence of foreign bodies, injuries or pathogens, as well as giving them advice and recommendations such as to seek medical attention - displaying them in a way almost akin to the HUD in a first-person shooter.
- Real-Time Tactical Mapping: By accessing location services such as GPS and Glonass, CHOIR is capable of generating a real-time map of the agent's vicinity that can be displayed on the AR interface much like an automap in a video game - allowing the agent to keep track of the location of, and communicate with fellow field agents (as long as they are similarly networked to CHOIR via WatchMe) - enabling them to better plan and coordinate their tactics during operations. If SERAPH agents at the headquarters are able to download a building's floor plans, it can even be used to generate automaps for indoors operations, and as long they are able to hack into surveillance systems in the area, they are even able to display on the automap the positions of hostiles and mission objectives.
- SERAPH Database: Being a UN-funded and backed organisation, SERAPH is able to access a wide range of government agency databases from UN member nations, ranging from military intel, to law enforcement records, immigration records and the like, and via the CHOIR network they are able to access the information they need for their operations. Exactly what kind of information the agent is able to access depends on the individual agent's security clearance level, the nature of the operation, and the degree of cooperation on the part of the agency they are requesting information from.
Frostfire Pharmaceuticals "Lifeline" Regen-Pak A marvel that resulted from a marriage between pharmaceutical research and bioengineering, the Lifeline Regen-Pak by Frostfire Pharmaceuticals is intended as the next-generation first aid kit for battlefield medics and paramedics. A cocktail of medical nanomachines and modified stem cells, a Regen-Pak can be administered in any number of ways to areas where damage or trauma to living tissue (such as lacerations, bruises, punctures, etc.) has been registered, assisting in swift repair and replacement of damaged tissue with healthy tissue. Depending on the severity of the trauma and the size of the damaged area, testers have seen minor trauma (small cuts, bruises, hairline fractures, first degree burns, etc.) recover within seconds, and moderate trauma (broken bones, second degree burns, large lacerations, etc.) recovering within minutes, while stablising severe trauma (stab wounds, compound fractures, third degree burns, etc.) to improve one's survival rate in the event swift medical attention might be delayed.
Takeshi carries up to three 20 ml doses of Lifeline Regen-Pak, typically administered via an autoinjector.
Equipment:
- AMT Javelina - a AMT Longslide variant that is chambered for the 10mm Auto cartridge.
- Cold Steel Recon Scout combat knife with kevlar sheath.
- CHOIR augmented reality headset - Resembles a stylish pair of sunglasses, it serves as a Google Glass-esque AR display that allows him to access CHOIR's various features. Usually has a spare set somewhere nearby or on his person.
- Several sets of business outfits.
